My son is a bright lad...academically ........... but.....................
Transcript of phone call with him today:

Son: “Dad, there`s a problem with my brakes”

( I have previously fitted him some spare Juicy Ultimates on his Rockhopper to make sure he can stop whilst hacking around in the traffic in Bristol..)

Me” What`s the problem?”
Son"Well, they were squeaking and it was really annoying"
Me “Well I fitted you new pads when you were last home as your pads were down to the metal, they probably just need the callipers re-aligning”
Son” Yeah well I`ve stopped the squeaking but now they won`t bloody work, in fact after I fixed them I nearly crashed `cause they just didn`t work at all”
Me “How did you fix them?”

(His response made me shout out across an open office whilst at work...)
.
.
.
.
.
Son “I oiled them........!”
WTF?????This is seriously happened, it`s not made up, he was actually annoyed that they now don`t work......... my apparently bright son actually oiled his brakes to stop them squeaking.........I just have to share this as it is driving me nuts...!!

Seriously, whilst descending the Monkey Trail at Cannock, my rear pads were close to needing replacement and the rear disc was a little worn too, I was braking to line up pass a guy on an Apollo BSO and the rear brake was squealing.
When I got to the bottom I stopped for a munch before heading back up and this guy on the BSO says "your brakes need oiling mate"
    I was gobsmacked!

My father oiled my brakes years ago. I mean, disc brakes were very new on mountain bikes back then, but this is a man who's been servicing cars and motorcycles for years

A mate of mine oiled his motorbike's brakes after they stuck on in winter... But luckily he wasn't hurt and a new wheel, forks and left hand fairing wasn't too expensive.

    Did he not like you?
What you're talking about is 'practice'... which should be banned as a performance enhancer!

tell the son to buy 2 pairs of swiss stop 4 season pads and get him to learn to adjust the pistons and caliper properly by himself, hes to carry a multi mini tool set with at all times, hes to buy a box of gloves and rags and isopropyl alcohol. he will have to figure out real soon.
