Tyres for commuting

Can anyone suggest appropriate tyres to switch onto my Cannondale MTB? I'm doing fire road and canal tow path so don't want too slick and want them to be reasonably wide to protect the overly expensive rims! Any thoughts? Thanks in advance...

i use continental race kings, they roll really nice on tar mac but have enough grip on things like tow paths:

i use the 2.0 wire on, a pair for less than £300 -
i ride a similar commute and have used Conti Twister Supersonics and Mountain Kings
The Conti's roll v fast, but durability is an issue (especially if you weigh 15 stone)
Mountain Kings are pretty good, but when the weather drys out, i will be going back to the Conti's (they are crap in muddy conditions)0 -
Thanks guys. I notice you're from Warrington DCR00, we probably have the same commute(!), I cycle from South Manchester to Birchwood along the canal and Trans Pennine...0

we prob cross eachother on the trail
my commute is South Warrington to Altrincham
what sort of time are you out at ?0 -
Would be hitting Altrincham about half 7 then 5:15 but currently roading it across Irlam locks due to all the mud around Sale...!!0

Yep, white Cannondale Taurine or gold Kona Explosif, white helmet and white Oakley Jawbones(!)...but honestly I'm not a w*nker !! You?0

Do On-one still have some of those Michelin XC Dry tyres on for £10 each? Bet they'd be good for commuting on a MTB.0

i have Schwalbe City Jets on my bike at the moment as doing some roady mileage for fitness. Seem pretty good and cheap too.

If your route is well drained, Conti Double Fighters are a bargain. Fast on tarmac, and good on canal paths and fire roads, but no good if you have any real mud.

I use these Nov to March for the 9 mile road, 2 mile hard packed trail commute:

There's enough grip for the odd muddy section.

in the summer. The centre bead means they roll fairly well on Tarmac.
I changed over last weekend.
Both are puncture resistant.

Thanks for all the tips guys. Now bought conti traffics, Manchester seems to get a dry march to June so look ideal. And DCR00 see you on the transpennine (when the tow path mud at sale improves!)0

I use these - kevlar protected - sick of non-stop punctures, I switched in 2009 - not one single puncture since!

They look ideal beelzebomb, i'll have to give them a go next time. The conti traffics arrived this morning from Wiggle, can't imagine anyone pays postage with them, stuff i order always seems to turn up the next day on the free post option...0

Yes Wiggle are great - not always the best prices, but the site, choice & their service is superb.0

Look at Halo Twin Rails0

I've seen the Halo's advertised, they interest me - any feedback on how fast they roll, weight etc?0

Not sure about weight but I took 10 mins off a 60 min commute over my normal offroad tyres. Very fast rolling.0
