Hi all
Just wondering what the general consensus is on a mobile bike mechanic?
Would anyone use one if prices were reasonable and competetive with the LBS. Taking into account that the mechanic would have to be trained to a very competent level with a recognised qualification.
Has anyone used one before and what was the service like?
Also would Calderdale be a good catchment area for one?
Thanks everyone

I've seen one operating from a big van around Cambridge. No idea how much business he does, but it should make a fortune round here!

I do my own fettling more as a hobby than a neccessity, so I wouldn't use one even if it was very cheap.

My ex bike mechanic started off mobile. He was great at visiting before and after work - even Sunday afternoons and not only did a great job, but his prices were much cheaper than going to your local LBS.

In London he went down a treat and was always busy.

He did so well that he hired a garage to work out of and now is moving into a bigger workshop. The reason I say ex is that he's so busy that you need to book your bike in with him 4-6 weeks in advance!

I still recommend the shop to my friends providing they don't mind the wait.

    Good luck!

I think it all depends where you are based and crucially what people are prepared to pay....unless you have all the tools, believe me it can be pricey getting kitted out, and the endless variety of different specs/makes etc means more tools.
Round this way `peeps want a full re build for £30 so dont expect to get rich quick?

Have a look at http://www.cyclefix.net/. This lists bona fide mobile services (of which I am a member). All the mechanics here are qualified and insured - many have lots of experience. Mobiles can be much more flexible than shps in terms of the time they will turn up on your doorstep - and the fact that they DO turn up on your doorstep. Most specialise in bike repairs only and as such have no vested interest in selling you a new bike -just repairing your existing one. They literally are a mobile repair shop.
