a band on mech with a 31.8mm clamp

depends if you are running SRAM, Shimano or Campag and what speed as to which exact one is ideal.

    Here would be a 10spd Shimano double/compact

  • Just to clarify, the seat tube daimeter is 34.9mm. The seat post, which goes inside the frame and attaches the saddle, is 31.8mm.

You are correct that the band around the seat tube should be 34.9mm and not 31.8mm as Maddog suggests.

Therefore, you have two choices; buy a 34.9mm band on front mech or a braze on front mech and 34.9mm band clamp to affix it to. A couple of advantages I can think of for the second choice is 1) it allows you to attach a chain catcher to the band clamp, which saves a few grams and is more aesthetically pleasing, and 2) if you want to remove your front mech you don't have to take the band off the frame, saving some stress on the frame and you having to faff about with cage alignment.

Whether band on or braze on, most if not all road front mechs are bottom pull. What groupset are you intending to buy?

    Hello

It is a race face cadence crankset, nice clearing up about the mech size! :-)
