Hello

I have just bought these wheels from Merlin:

http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop ... EQUIPE.htm

And this cassette:

http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop ... e_2423.htm

I have fitted the cassette as per the instructions and tightened to the specified torque of 50nm but there is still about 0.25 - 0.5mm of movement in the cassette. All of my other wheels have no movement in the cassette so this obviously isn't correct. It looks like when the lock ring is removed the freehub is sitting proud of the cassette and causing the problem.

Could it be that the freehub is not on correctly although this would be a litle odd on a set of new factory built wheels. Do I need some sort of spacer?

I will take it to my lbs and get them to take a look at it if all else fails. I don't want to send the wheels back to Merlin as I was hoping to get out on them this weekend!

Thanks for your help!

  • Just found a spacer loose in the bottom of the box under one of the flaps. Put that on to the freehub first and all tightens up OK now! Good job it didn't fall out!!!

    yep, that's the answer

btw, just in case you ever get a sram cassette...

shimano 10-speed cassettes need a 1mm spacer when used with a 9/10-speed hub

sram 10-speed cassettes don't need the spacer, they are designed to be the same depth as a 9-speed cassette
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny
