My apologies if this questions lacks origonality.

I am currently riding a Giant Talon Zero and would like to upgrade(?) to a new/different bike. However there is way too much to choose from for a beginner like me and would appreciate some ideas.

I spend most of my time at Swinley Forest, using the fire roads for fitness and occasional single track, I would like to improve my riding skills for the single track.

Last year I spent many weekends in South Wales exploring the routes from VB guide book and would like to do much more of the same this year.

Budget is £3000.
Full-sus or HT?

Full sus 100%, that way you wont need to upgrade if you get more into it.

You have £3k to spend? I'd do a crud load of research (both online and trying them out) before forking out that sort of money.

Personally I'd say go for a lightweight -120mm to 140mm full suss, but theres so many to choose from and no doubt you'll get a barrage of individuals saying "Oh you must get this particular bike its the nuts".

The Scott Genius 20 or Rocky Mountain Altitude 70 RSL?

If you had a choice which would you choose?

The Scott and the RM both look mental, but I'd probably be more inclined to go with the Scott as they're a more popular brand I think than RM. Plus I've heard the equalizer shock is meant to be pretty special! Try and grab a test ride if you can!

  • If you're looking at a first full suss, can't go wrong with the Specialized Camber (not that I recommend it in every other post or anything!). 120mm travel but slacker angles than your usual 120mm bike so it's more stable. Other half has an Elite as her first mtb and cannot say enough good things about it - I've ridden it a fair bit and it's really nice, very confidence-inspiring. At your budget you'd be able to get the Pro and still have £900 change, plus Spesh are giving away 10% of the bike's value in accessories at the mo.
