I have recomended one of these to a mate who is looking to spend up to £1500 on a trail bike. He is worried about the strength of carbon & his weight. He is 15 stone.
Is the carbon 456 suitable for heavier riders?
Are there any alternatives? Preferably complete bikes only.

Cotic BFe, 456, something by ragley are the general recommendations in this class. I might chuck in a dialled alpine- trialled one today, probably a bit much for me but it was kitted out with 160mm fix 36 vans- bit heavier, but he's not going to break it!
Rock Lobster 853, Trek 1200 and a very old, tired and loved Apollo Javelin.

I'm 14.5 stone and I am not worried about my carbon 456. (and I know a 'bit' about carbon fibre ;) )

Thanks. Sounds like it will be ideal for him. Far better than a similar price full sus.

I was quite impressed by the spec of the boardman full susser.

No idea what it is like to ride/live with though.

I'd have been very tempted by the carbon 456 if I'd not fallen in love with the Mmmbop... Lovely bikes.

it would be even more awesome if you run your brake hose down the correct side of the fork leg :D

my mate ran his on the outside and crashed into a tree ripping the hose out the lever, bad times.

I am a little tempted to replace my Trance X frame with a carbon 456 to be honest. The Trance X is awesome but I'm kind of wanting to go back to a hardtail, I'm building a 456 summer season for mini DH racing which might keep me happy for a while but full isn't quite as much fun as a hardtail.

any pictures etc please let me know as i've very tempted by the 456 carbon trail as well!!!
  • Can honestly say (though I'm biased as I work for Planet X!) that the Carbon 456 has absolutely no weight restrictions at all... It's proper solidly made and I'd challenge anyone to crack it... Have one myself and it is by far the most fun, fast, hardcore bike I've ever ridden.
