Barrel Adjusters

I'm progressing through a build and just about to cable up the front and rear mechs.

After attaching the barrel adjusters to the down tube, I have a couple of questions:-

1. How far should they be screwed in, initially? Most of the way in, most of the way out or about half way?

2. When I've finished cabling, which way increases the tension on the cable - screwing the barrel adjuster further in, or further out?

I know I ought to be able to work this out in my head, but it's been a long week.

Thanks for any help

    1. About the middle of their range
    2. Screwing them out increases the pull on the cable by making the outer longer. If the outer gets longer then there's less cable poking out of the end of it. Do y'see?
    3. Long week, yes. Trying to get my head around flipping bits by XOR ing in some code I'm writing. GAH.

I'd go for screwed in about two thirds of the way; just looks a bit neater, plus gives you more adjustment later for cable stretch. And don't forget to put some grease or copperslip on the threads first; they can be very hard to get at if they corrode and get stuck.

I usually find that I do not put as much tension on with my hand as the cable will eventually run, so I have the adjuster most of the way in.

  • Good info, thanks very much.

Just spent my lunch hour cabling (the bike's in my office...)

Of course, I HAD forgotten to grease the adjusters, but all sorted now.

Screw-em right and back-off a turn or so. Rarely do you have too much tension when cabling a bike, but plenty of time do you need to increase it, particularly as the ferrules and outer cables bed-in.
