I've got £100 to spend on a set of disc brakes. I'm building a 100mm travel Mongoose Canaan, and i ride XC and trails.

I've seen either:

* Avid Juicy 3 - 160/160
* Magura Julie HP - 180/160
* Hayes Stroker Ryde - 160/160

What are peoples thoughts on these, and which would be the best bet?

Thanks in advance.

    I'd stump up the extra £30 for a set of Formula K24s, lots better than those your looking at.

    Very similar (if not the same) review in this months MBUK as well.

    Although not as well known, i'd say the Quad NANO's should be in the running. Even though MBUK only gave 3.5 stars, that's the same as some brakes twice the price got. And, saw them in MBR a while back and they got 8/10........

    £60 a brake, cant go far wrong.....
  • Stay away from Hayes stroker theyre rubbish. First thing I did when I bought my Cube was replace them with Avid elixers

    Jucy3's are very good for the money but if you keep your eyes open you can usually find great deals on 5's, elixers etc from CRC in their sale. Worth looking!

  • i would (and possibly am ! ) go for the juicy 3s

    I'm afraid I have to disagree with dan shard. I had Avid Juicy 7s on my Specialized Epic when I first got it, worked well to start with but never gave me the stopping power I wanted despite a bleed and change of pads as they aged.

    I went for Hayes Stroker Rydes from Merlin and despite the budget price tag they've been really good for riding XC

    Obviously it depends on what sort of riding you're looking to do but personally I'd steer clear of Avid
