As the title suggests im looking to upgrade from my first road bike, a Carrera TDF  , sorry! I got into cycling last year as a way to get to work and get fit and now i love it, so would like to upgrade to something more respectable so i can enter some sportives and maybe a local TT.

My budget isnt brilliant, between £600-£700 at a push, and found a couple of bikes on the Evans cycles website.

The Bianchi Via Nirone 7 Xenon 2010
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/bia ... e-ec021257

And the Felt 2100 2011
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/fel ... e-ec024149

What are peoples opinions on these bike, or if you can recommend something else within my budget i would be very grateful :D

The other option is to save up for another month or two to up my budget towards a £1000 and maybe get the Boardman team carbon, but the Halfords side of it puts me off

????Help, thanks :D

  • 1. Go to LBS
    2. Try a few out
    3. Buy the one that feels best

    Job done!

P.S. Try the old "I love this bike but it's just out of my price range". Good LBS will knock money off RRP and usually throw in a few free goodies too :D

If the two I'd be leaning towards the Bianchi (for looks as much as anything else).

I'd also suggest looking a the Boardman Comp or the Specialized Allez (double or triple) options as it's perhaps the benchmark bike in that sort of price range - along with the Giant Defy and the entry level Cannondale Synapse. If you want something comfier then there is the Specialized Sectuer as well. It should be quite straightforward finding a dealer with stock of those as well.
  • thanks for the reply's, i will find a local bike shop and maybe go try some out at the weekend. :D
  • Just spotted this on ebay, good price and spec for my budget and also money left over for some goodies?

    What ya reckon?
  • Hi, I have that bike and am using it as a commuter now so upgrading shortly to carbon. Its been a really good bike.

I have broken 3 spokes on separate occasions on the rear wheel!! bloody annoying! i weigh 13,9 not overly weighty? sometimes feel its a harsh ride

The only thing i would say is that right now there are some cracking deals on the web for last year model bikes and if you could stretch the budget slightly cycling weekly have just given a ribble bike a very big winning thumbs up on a group test, its a grand but carbon and light
you should grap a copy (this weeks)

    good luck
  • Thanks for the advice haveitmyson, but i took peoples advice and went out today to look at some bikes and ended up at Pauls Bikes in hitchin after visiting some other local shops to look at some Treks, but ended up buying a Specialised Allez Elite :D:D

Last years model, but got a good deal and also my girlfreind bought me a new helmet too bless her.
Will add some pics tomorrow for anyone interested, thanks again :)
  • For heaven's sake... buy ANYTHING but a Boardman. Halford's own brand with his name on it. I cannot understand why (apart from price) people would want to buy that c**p.

No history, no culture, no romance and let's face it CB wasn't exactly Eddie Merckx.

FWIW. For a grand - anything 'Italian' (I know, I know... they're all MADE in Taiwan), Bianchi or a used Wilier Mortirolo.

Well... that's got that off my chest! :D

Even if it is bigotted nonsense...
  • go for a allez, cant reccommend them enough, u can do everything on it, even racing. you'd get a top spec one for a grand, or get a cheaper one and upgrade wheels etc urself.

Wheelie, if that wasn't a deliberate troll read your post again and try and imagine how you are coming across to others

I'll give you a clue- it rhymes with farce

    Wow
    What a load of crap.
I bet manufacturers and marketing folk see you coming a mile off and think:

For goodness sake wise up !

Boardmans are fitted with Shimano105/sram Rival and many other well respected branded components and as you say yourself most bike frames are made in Taiwan so basically mugs like you are paying for Italian names on frames made in Taiwan.

The good History and the culture and romance of the Italian branded bikes was lost when the production was moved to the Far East.

The only thing Italian is the name on the frame everything else was made in Taiwan etc
then the marketing men slap a extra £1000 on the price tag, for the suckers like you
who think they are buying Romance Culture and History.

Romance Culture and History went out the window with Globalization.
  • So what you're saying is that Rapha-wearing Italophiles are full of s%^t? Do you want a job with bikeradar? We could do with an injection of reality on this site. I too remain unconvinced that a Colnago carbon frame made in Taiwan (or Italy for that matter) really has an elderly italian craftsman lovingly placing those sheets of Carbon fibre into a mold and pressing the button marked 'inject resin'.

The 'mystique' or 'romance' of Italian frames disappeared when people realised that american frames were better. See the TdF in the 90's... remember the italian team on cannondales? Real slow weren't they?
