HI Guys
I hope someone can help me
My chain is slipping on my training bike. It seemes to be happening only when I am in the big chain ring and out of the saddle.
Do you think the chain needs replacing or does the derailer need adjusting.

Thanks for any advice

Mark

Is there plenty of oil on the chain?

It's possible the cassette needs replacing. Is the chain newer than the cassette? Does it tend to happen more with the smaller rear sprockets?
  • No not just in the small cogs also dont think its the cassette as it happens when i have my traiing wheel on on the turbo and that cassette is new.

Perhaps then it's the opposite, and because the chain is worn it's not meshing well on the new cassette? Can you try a new chain? Do you have a chain wear checker?

Both new chain/old cassette and old chain/new cassette will slip.
If you only change wheel occasionally it's quite likely that the road cassette and the chain are worn, so the unworn cassette on the training wheel will slip.
To prevent slip there are 3 options.
option 1: Have a chain for each wheel and swap chains with the wheels
option 2: Have one cassette and put it on whichever wheel you are using.
option 3: Keep an eye on chain wear and replace the chain before it's too worn

In your current situation, either put the road wheel cassette on the training wheel, or get a new chain for the training wheel.
  • Have you tried adjusting the derailleur?
There is an adjustment screw to adjust it forwards and backwards. If its to far back you will have less chain in contact with the cassette. To far forward and it wont shift when on the small ring. Just the correct adjustment will give more teeth in the chain and no slip.

my solution my seem ott but it works

when you replace caseete get THREE new chains and swap them every 500 miles, on both winter and summer bikes i get 4 uses out of each chain, occasionally 3 before it is 0.75% stretched and all chgains mesh with the cassette., ie 6000 miles per cassette and 3 chains. This has worked well for years.

Since it happens only in the big ring, it might be the chain slipping on the big ring.

So try fitting a new big ring.

Very difficult to get the chain to hop on the big ring; there's too much chain wrapped round it. Much more likely to be chain / cassette not meshing properly for whatever reason

Maybe difficult, but I spent an afternoon tweaking my rear changer, thinking chain was jumping between gears. Then swapped big chainring for another I had and it was then fine.

So if its only happening in big ring thats what I would look at.
  • Thanks for all the reply's guys have ordered a new chain will try that first and see how it goes. Mark
