What do you wear on your legs when it's raining?

What’s best?
I have an Altura waterproof jacket that’s only ever seen about 3 days use, but now I’ve got shiny new mudguards I’m determined to keep cycling in whatever the weather. Currently I’m going with thermal running tights with some lightweight running pantaloon things over the top so that I’m not obviously smuggling a budgie, but these are going to be sodden if I go in the rain…

Hot pants. Skin is waterproof so expose as much of it as possible.

    how far is your commute?

at 6 miles for mine I don't particularly worry about getting wet so much and dress for the temp more than anything.

if it was particularly bad on the way in I might take a spare set of clothes in a carrier bag within my backpack so i had something dry to wear when i started my homeward journey.

Rainlegs (http://www.rainlegs.com) plus whatever is needed to stay warm. Hard to find a less sexy look, but I'm more concerned with the fact that they work.

    '09 Enigma Eclipse with SRAM.
'10 Tifosi CK7 Audax Classic with assorted bits for the wet weather
'08 Boardman Hybrid Comp for the very wet weather.

Not 100% waterproof but very good job until the bottom of tights get waterlogged then run down in to shoes. Last time this happend it took 45min of very heavy rain before I felt water in shoes. Everything drys pretty well if I put it in comms room except shoes if very wet I keep a pair of seal skinz socks in bag for this scenario (e.g. wear them if shoes already wet).

  • I've given up trying to keep my legs dry. I wear 3/4 length Endura Humvee biking shorts whatever the weather/time of year. They dry pretty damn quick, and my skin dries even quicker. I also keep a spare pair of shoes at work (along with the normal change of clothes etc.).

  • My commute is about 8.5 miles, so not that far I suppose.
Half the problem is finding somewhere to dry sweaty, rain-soaked tights etc. where they won’t upset my colleagues!

Server Room if you have one - works for me :D
  • My office is air conditioned, and full of macs/raids/film scanning equipment. Nothing's wet in here by the end of a long day :)

I also share it with a couple of other extremely understanding guys (both of whom ride bikes).

I always dress to the temperature rather than any rain. I'm probably going to get damp due to sweat anyway, a situation that will be worsened if I wear waterproofs, so as long as I'm warm, I don't care how wet I get.

I put on a rain poncho. Covers my whole upper boddy and doesn't let the bottom part get wet from rain. It costs like 10 quid.

Same as I wear when it's not raining. I dress in roadie cycle gear appropriate to the temperature (bib shorts in summer, bib tights in winter). It's important it doesn't flap around or lose too much heat when it gets wet. But once I've got those bases covered, I'd prefer to be soaked by rain than sweat!

If it's not cold, just waterproof shorts. If it's cold I wear Endura leggings - either the normal water resistant ones for light rain, or the proper water proof ones for cats 'n' dogs situations.

Altura Attack waterproof shorts as someone else mentioned - keeps my bum dry then just let the rain run off my legs.

montane featherlite pants: not waterproof but thin windproof nylon. They are showerproof, and dry really quickly.

DHB trousers over tights or Lycra shorts (but only cos they won't fit over jeans). So far 100% watertight ( and look OK too)
FCN 5 belt driven fixie for city bits
CAADX 105 beastie for bumpy bits
    Litespeed L3 for Strava bits

Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.
  • Nike // Addidas 3 1/4's, endura knee warmers and hang to dry in work, only a 4 mile commute each way roughly
  • waterproof over trousers if its cats and dogs.

anything less and i just hang up the regatta walking trousers i wear whatever the weather. not had pleasure of summer riding yet.

As said previously - I dress for the temperature not the precipitation. Legs are covered by whatever the outside temp demands (shorts or tights)

I leave my shoes to dry as best as possible during the day - dry socks help with the inital "Eurgh!" moment at the end of the day.

I wear cargo shorts 'n they seem to dry fairly quick. Actually that's a lie, they don't, but in the morning I don't tend to get caught out by rain, and in the evening I can just dry them at home overnight.

I don't feel the cold much when I cycle, and I overheat a lot, so I'd rather get a bit wet from rain than turn into a sweaty wreck.

    Embrace the rain 8)
  • lol can't believe some of you would hang wet gear in a comms or server room...

I would get very seriously shot for even thinking that out loud at our datecentre :)

Anyone tried Endura Gridlock Waterproofs?? I'm looking to get something, bought some berghaus fully waterproof trousers last year but never ended up using them then when i've some to use them this year i can't fit in them so i'm going to sell those and buy new. Reviews on wiggle for the Endura Gridlock seems ok - what you guys think?

I have gone through this winter and last with Roubaix bib tights (no Pad)from DHB treated once a month with nikwax. Assos bibshorts under those. IMO its a bit of fallacy to say that rain water making contact with your skin is any sort of problem really, regardless of the temperature. Roubaix kind of makes sure that your skin stays warm and comfortable no matter what.
