Different brakes

My front Avid Juicy 3 brake has failed. Any reason why I shouldn't run a different brake on the front such as an Elixir?

no reason not to.
any reason not to have it serviced?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Just wondered what the accepted wisdom was on this. I guess the brakes could have quite a different feel as Juicy 3s seem quite spongey.
Apparently the lever piston has broken and I'm told it would be cheaper to replace the whole lever assembly. Except I can't find one on its own so I'm thinking of picking up an entire new front brake from CRC or somewhere. I could a replacement juicy and just replace the lever part and keep the rest for spares or upgrade the whole thing....0 -
Can't go wrong if you check the mounts - might not even matter as you can use your current one.

i'm in the same spot (sorry to jump on your thread)
One of the pistons in my rear calliper (Bike Hut branded, Diatec Sports?) has failed (magnet has disintegrated so there’s nothing to pull the pad back). There’s no spares as the brake has long been discontinued.
So.
Do i buy a complete new rear brake, or do i buy both front and back so that they match?
Problem is I’m on a budget of around £100 and from what i can see you don’t get much front and back for that.0 -
A smidge over £120 for avid elixir 5 pairs from merlin...0
-
do you rate them? i know nowt
are they ok to setup etc? i'll be buying on recommendation/review at the end of the day.
and will Post mount fit my Tora forks?0 -
Dunno - depends what mounts your tora's have.
They are good for the money.
Fine to set - same as Js, but the pads are easier to change0 -
They're pretty good
unbolt old ones, bolt on new ones, i'd use the new rotors as well
read the brake FAQs0 -
good point
cheers, thanks for the advice.0 -
yeah - i'll replace everything i.e. rotors, brake levers etc etc0

For 100 quid from merlin you can get Avid Juicy 3s or for 120 quid Shimano Deores.
Or if you have a look around the classified's on here you might pick up a bargain0 -
I think you can get a set of Formula Oro K18's for 125 direct from Formula unless they have sold out, if they haven't that would be my choice. So much better than Elixir's in every way0

erm.......... whats the difference people?
Shimano Deore 6 Bolt RT61 Rotor -160mm
Shimano Splined Rotors SM-RT53 160mm

One's center lock the other is 6 bolt.
If you've got centerlock hubs then you can run either with an adaptor.
If you have 6 bolt hubs only buy the 6 bolt.0 -
ah. understood. thanks mate.
first time fettling with them, kinda finding my feet
gonna go with the Deore 595's as they're the closest to budget and get canny reviews. Wary of Juicy 3's as seem to have seen loads of issues with the setup, swapping pads etc..0 -
have a look round the sales - you might pick something quite good up for less than normal...
A rear elixir R on CRC for 69 quid:

Or how bout these for a bargain:

Mixing brakes sounds like a terrible idea but remember that the 2 brakes will never be doing the same thing anyway, so it's not like you're depending on identical response on each hand. It probably freaks some people out but I got on fine with it (with a gucci XT on the rear and a cheapo Tektro on the front )Uncompromising extremist0

Juicy 3's are a bit of a hit & miss affair, the OEMs that bikes come fitted with seem to be problematic
Get them to a decent bike shop for a bleed and they'll server you well..
If you only need a lever housing, shop on Ebay there's always plenty going dirt cheap, get the bike to a reputable bike shop for installation and bleed and it's done cheaply and properly0 -
I run Formula brakes (K24 Oro) and i'm really pleased with them. I had Hope Mono Minis on my previous bike, but i'm a convert to Formula nowLife is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away....
