Hi all
Although I often come and read what you guys post around here, I only registered today and join your community. I have been meaning to join the forum for while but its only today that I have done so.
I bought a Carrera Subway 1 a while ago. So far I am very satisfied with the bicycle, but not being able to raise the stem (threadless) is very annoying.
I have been looking in several shops and online selling websites for stem risers but I really dont know which one I should get. I am also not sure about the stem size, if its 1 1/8 or the new 31mm
If anyone can advice me on this I would be very grateful. I went to Halfords to ask for help and I think I knew more about bikes than the poor kid working behind the counter!
Thanks
Jorge

  • You really won't go wrong by paying a visit to your local bike shop. In all probability they will advise you, sell you what you need, and if they are like my LBS, as long as you don't damage the item, they will most likely let you try it, and swap it if it's not quite right.

  • I dislike ahead style stems on recreational/commuter bikes. Old style quill stems are much the better option.

    You got two choices:-

1/ Fit an ahead stem extender, like one of these: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/zoom-heads-u ... prod18251/

2/ Fit a more sticky-up stem, like a high rise one or an adjustable one.

You could also fit new forks and cut the steerer to suit. And likewise, new forks with a threaded steerer could be fitted to convert to an old style quill stem.

How much higher do you want? If it is not too much then you can just pop another spacer underneath.

If it's a lot then a very long, large angle riser stem will bring you up, but you might prefer a pair of high rise swept back bars.
