When do you decide it's time to change the cleats?
Having been a speedplay user for years (on one pair of cleats - probably inadvisably) I tried some look, and they felt really stable and planted, yet cannot abide by the amount of failed clip-ins. Can see how looks are good for racing but i'm purely commuting and audax.
So I'm going back to speedplay, and a new set of cleats, which i'm sure will solve the play that i'm sure i could feel, but the onset of this is obviously a gradual thing, so is there any definitive way to know when to change the cleats, or is it just a case of when they start to feel a bit woolly?

My own personal gauge is to replace when the spring wire is worn to about 1/3 of the original thickness. This hasn't seemed to shorten the life of the contact points in the pedals or caused any other problems. I just worry that any more wear than that might result in the spring wire breaking in the middle of a ride. I have not had any failures in about 17 yrs of use but do find that the cleats are harder to disengage/engage as they get near the end of their lives.
