Ultegra 6700 Breaking

I have just upgraded my Levers to 6700 from SL. Did a 90k training race this morning and found that the breaking was atrocious. I do need new blocks on the back breaks but they were ok last week, had no problem at all with them.
Has anybody got any ideas?
Thanks
Paul

Did you update the levers but not the calipers ? The 6700 levers are not compatible with the sl calipers as they use different leverage ratios. The 6700 levers are only compatible with the 7900 and 6700 calipers (not sure about the 5700).

Was going to say exactly the same thing
  • Thanks for that. Was kind of thinking that must be the case :?

What a load of nonsense. The 7900, 6700, and 5700 all work perfectly with their predecessors, it's Shimano that say they won't.

With respect to your comment but that's not what Shimano say. Do you have personal experience of this as the braking ratio is totally different and they advise about lack of braking power, which is kind of what they guys complaining about hey? See the compatibility chart on the Shimano site.

Yes I do. I run 7900 STI's with 7800 calipers and have no issues on my summer bike. Winter bike is running 5700 STI's with 6600 calipers, again no issues. To add though, I don't use the crappy Shimano break pads. Use Koolstop Salmons

This time Adihead got in first !

You can put the 6700 levers with the sl calipers and they will brake, but because of the different braking ratio they will not work as well as either a 6700/6700 or sl/sl lever and caliper set. Mixing the two is not recommended by Shimano (who are reasonably competent to pass technical judgement ?) and it is a reasonable assumption that this explains the poor performance experienced by the op.

At a push you can mix 6700 and sl, but having shelled out to upgrade to 6700 levers it doesn't make a lot of sense to then run a compromised calper and lever set.

So you're saying that the day you swapped from the old series levers to the new ones, same pads before and after, there was no difference in braking performance? That's a genuine question, with no sarcasm intended btw!

Sarcasm, where? :) No not had any issues at all. Still stop as sharply so can't complain. Both bike's have Mavic Ksyrium SL's if that's any help.

Very interesting. I've found Shimano pads are good on Shimano wheels though. Mavics def work better with the Samons as you say - I've got Elites rather than SL's. I use Shimano R650 long reaches on my 'winter' and their C%^p btw

I changed my 105 5600 shifters for 6700 last year, and immediately noticed a significant drop in braking power, especially when riding on the hoods. Upgraded the brakes shortly afterwards and all was good.

As far as I remember Shimano list them as 'B' compatible, which means they will 'work', but they're not intended to be used together.
