This may sound like a daft question, but, can 10 speed triple shimano105 sti levers and triple front mech be used with double da 7800 chainset, and 7800 shortarm rear mech. current setup = 105 sti 5600 triple shifters, rear mech 105 5600 long arm, front mech 105 5600 triple, 10 speed da 7800 casette and chain. basically I got a da chainset, rear mech at a good price, and have not used the inner chainring on my triple setup at all yet. any advice appreciated.

Shimano 5600 shifters are double/triple compatible....this will work with double chainset and short-cage rear mech.
You should definitely change to double specific front mech, as even if this works the shifting will be very troublesome.

***Shimano 105 shifters are prone to breaking when used on double because many users have 'over-shifted'. The throw is longer to cater from triple mechs, and this allows some users to force the throw past the stopper and break it.
However I would definitely use your existing shifters rather than fork out for new or used set of double specific levers like ultegra et al.

Oh...and your proposed setup will work with long or short cage rear mech no worries.
  • I think most people with triples sometimes wonder why the granny ring is there - it is never going to be used frequently like the middle and outer rings are. You'll be kicking yourself for getting rid of it one of these days.
  • Thanks for advice so far. I wont be getting rid of the triple gear - i'm not getting any younger!. initially the da 7800 stuff was to be destined for a new cheapish tri bike, but I have to save for the frame and bars now, so that will be months yet. then it seemed a shame to have dura ace sitting in a box and not being used. I also have a new set of ultegra 6600 triple sti shifters (can't refuse a 1/2 price sale bargain!) which I could use and a braze on da 7800 front derailleur. (I only realised yesterday by looking up wiggle.co.uk that you can buy a bracket to allow you use a braze on fd on a frame which normaly takes a band on).

so now I'm thinking ult 6600 triple sti, da 7800 chainset, da 7800 fd (with adaptor), da 7800 rd..

    what do you think :?:
