hi all

went to evans cycles today to look at th maxxis high roller 2.35 tyre, just wondering if anyone knows, hopefully someone has the same bike as me and has had 2.35 tyres on it before

i asked in evans, they were not too sure, went to decathlon which was near by, they were not sure, anyone got a wheel with a maxxis 2.35 tyre on it that i can borrow for 5 seconds?

otherwise i have no idea if i can get this tyre but i would love to if possible

  • on there at the moment i have tyres that came with the bike when i bought it late last year, so just rubbish tyres i am guessing, but the tyres are cst mtb traction all season compound, and they are 2.1 tyres

before considering the high rollers i was considering the 2.35 continental vertical 2.35 tyres which i heard are not actually 2.35 because of the way they are measured, not sure in what way or how true that is but it confuses me

    thanks for the reply

  • Maxxis tyres tend to come up quite small.

My 2.35 minion is more like a 2.1 same with my ignitors.
  • would the width of the 2.35 minions and ignitors be exactly the same width as the high roller? seeing as they are all maxxis, i am guessing that would be the case

also is there any way i can find out accurately? i have a tape measure but i am not sure if that would do any good or not?

  • alternatively i have been looking up the panaracer fire xc pro which is a 2.1 tyre, cheap too, for the steel bead

From experience I can tell you that the FireXC Pro is an excellent all round tyre, plus many Forum Members rate it
Keep in mind that the FireXC Pro is directional if you decide to go that route, make sure you get the orientation correct
  • ok sounds good, anyone got any photos of the all black panaracers? not that important but just wondering how they look, that is the colour i will most likely go for which is £16 here http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Panaracer-Fire- ... _15929.htm

so because it is directional does that just mean i will have to fit the tyre to the wheel correctly so the arrows on the tyres point forward once on the bike?

are the panaracers good for speed? it would be a bonus if they were

You'll almost certainly be fine with the Highroller, there's not many bikes you can't fit a 2.35 HR into with them being so skinny.

Fire XC Pro is, well... dated lets say. Not a bad tyre, just very ordinary and a bit uncompetitive- too draggy for the grip it offers. But a good sensible allrounder still and good in the mud. I can't see any reason to get one over a Nevegal mind.

mmm, fair dos but it's not a huge price difference and it's a big tradeoff. Tyres make or break a bike after all

That's the one. They do come in about 20 different flavours  What people usually recommend is a stick-e compound one on the front and a DTC on the rear, I go with that too. And 2.1 at both ends should do you fine, they're about the same size as the 2.35 Highrollers and give a good balance of grip and drag. Nevegals aren't fast but they're grippy, fairly tough, reasonably light, wear well, oh and £20 each. Good sensible all rounders really. I've done bits of fort william's world cup dh route on a pair of 2.1 Nevegals

  • Try your rim specification to find out what sizes it can take. My rims actually give the range of tyre widths.

Watch out for the arrow - it is the direction of roll it shows so on the front with the arrow at the highest point it should point forwards. But at its lowest point it would point backwards. Some (eg Michelin) recommend an opposite direction for the rear and so they tyres have two arrows pointed in opposite directions - but annotated front and rear.

Sorry about that but I needed some pedantry before the weekend set in.

There's one on the back of the Inbred in my sig pic. This is the folding bead version though, IIRC the steel bead has smaller writing and a picture of a fire on them as well.

My tyre has 2 arrows on, labelled front and back.

I agree with this whole heartedly, I've got some 2.3 fat alberts on my xc bike at the mo and they do not fill me with confidence like my Kendas. I also use small block 8's in the summer or a nevegal dtc front SB8 back combo which I find to be a really nice set up

I use a 2.35 Highroller on the back of one or my bikes and it comes up jus short of 2.4" from the edge of the side knobs but they are tall about 2.4-5".. But the 2.5" highrollers on andother bike come up to just over 2.5" just cross the casing but aren't that tall :?

hey they work fine on my XC bike :P
  • well basically it was going to come down to nevegals or fire xc pros, i may go for the fire xc pros now as they can be had for £24 for 2 tyres and they are in all black, i have to be tight at times due to what i can afford, i also want to buy myself some topeak defender m1 and m2 mud guards which will be easier to afford also if i get the fire xc pros

    thoughts? :P

  • hi all

taken a gamble and bought 2 maxxis high rollers from ebay for £10 for both, with average wear on them, so if the gamble does not pay off i am not losing out on too much, i guess if i need to i can sell them if they do not fit and buy panaracer fire xc 2.1 most likely

but fingers crossed for me that the maxxis high rollers fit nicely :P
