Does anyone know of any frame builders who work with aluminium as I would like
some rear disc brake mounts welded onto my Trek ali frame and poss the fork if I can't
find a suitable aftermarket replacement with disc mounts?

A replacement frame is probably much easier to find than a framebuilder. Most modern frames are disc-friendly.

Firstly, you'll need 135mm OLN to take a disc-compatible hub. Secondly, whether there's enough clearance inside the stays to take a disc - most disc stays a 'kinked' for clearance - and finally, whether the stays are strong enough to take the additional stresses generated by the brake? I know an ex-pro rider who broke his shoulder when the seatstay failed on a non-disc frame he had modded to take one. Finally, if the frame is a heat-treated alloy, e.g. 6000-series - you can't weld it without the need for post-weld heat treatment. Save yourself a lot of hassle and get a frame designed for the job.

A new fork and frame I'm afraid. Although I do seem to remember some bolt on gadget. Try googling something along the lines of "Bolt on disc brake mounts". I think most are MTB but I do recall a road bike.

But I won't trust anything like that! Get a new frame and fork designed for the job

  • After market disc mounts will be in 7005 - see Ceeway website.

7005 can be welded to your frame whatever aluminium it is made from, like 6061 or 7005. It is not as if your frame will then need to be artificially aged after modification - it is not as if you are making up a new frame from scratch. And if both your frame and the disc mounts are made from 7005 series, the work will age harden of its own accord as material precipitates over the course of a few weeks.

Cost? Vernon Barker Cycles website says about £70. Add on the price of a respray, assuming you want one, and it might have been a whole lot easier to have bought the right frame in the first place.
