40th birthday dream bike

I would def agree with the guys saying a custom build.
I saved for four years for my build.
Reynolds 953 , chorus group set, cosmic wheels, and a few added carbon bits.
It was a great experience.
Brian rourke was a really great help. It's a dream bike and will last me a lifetime. Had it for a while now but the 953 rides like a dream.
Make sure you pick something special0 -
I agree with the custom frame/bespoke build approach, assuming that you have the time to visit the builder(s) of choice for the discussions/fittings etc
If you are cash rich but time poor, then that approach may not be viable...
I may have to start prompting the wife for a "super special" 45th present - 50 will be too long to wait

I've read this with great interest. I'm 40 this summer and plan to do the same thing. I fancied a Colnago Master in Sarronni red cos I loved that bike when I first got into cycling. However it's went up from 1000 to 1500 in the last 3 years which really puts me off. Made me change my mind and have been looking at the Storck frames. After reading this thread I'm starting to think about a custom number now. I'll prob change my mind a few times again over the coming months 8)If suffer we must, let's suffer on the heights. As others have said get something custom made so it IS special and invididual to you. For me it's probably going to be a Pegoretti in a wild paint job(as long as I don't have to get it from THAT shop!)
Wow Markos, will look forward to seeing that. Hope you bring it on the club runs 8)
You'll get to see it loads, going to be built up as my club bike Carl rather than a racer, so emphasis on comfort, looks and usability. Probably Campag Chorus, Deda finishing kit and some handbuilts(Ambrioso rims on Tune hubs from Wheelsmith)Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

Superb.
I could change my username to Carl_P_1962 and April 2012 is the big Hawaii Five O for me. Wifey seems quite supportive of me having a 'keeper' for my 50th. Hopefully she was talking about a bikeSpecialized Venge S Works
Cannondale Synapse
Enigma Etape
Genesis Flyer Single Speed
Turn the corner, rub my eyes and hope the world will last...0 -
it was my 18th a few months back, got a custom bob jackson on order, with thomson and dura ace kitting awaiting its arrival, the custom experience is special, means so much more than any mass produced carbon bikeIt's not the will to win that matters...everyone has that. It's the will to prepare to win that matters.0

A Master is now more that that at a lot of shops, can be up to £1700! This is silly when you can get custom ti or 953 for less. It’s the most beautiful sport in the world but it’s governed by ***ts who have turned it into a crock of ****.0
