steering problems and bike veering to the side

im new to road cycling and have a problem with my bike and hope someobody can help ! a few days ago a friend gave me an old set of carbon forks he didnt want and installed them on my bike for me, he removed the crown race from my old forks and used it on the new ones and it looks great, today was my first chance to get out on the bike and straight away it didnt feel right, the bike felt stiff and was leaning over to the left all the time. i rode it for about 5 minutes and it didnt feel safe so i went home and i need help !!

im guessing its something to do with the forks/headset but as i say im totally new to this and no idea what it is !!!!

problem solved, decided to take a look and see if it was anything obvious, removed top cap and loosened the stem and took the forks off and in doing so i dropped some spacers onto the floor, when i was picking them up i also found the lower head tube race lying on the floor :? , basically when my forks were put on he has obviosuly forgottten or dropped it and just installed the bearings straight in !!! ive put it all back together but the bearings are making a bit of a grinding noise so im guessing they have gotten damaged.
