Will a 9sp chain work on an 8 sp?

I’m sure this has been asked a million times before but I haven’t got time to search.

Got a couple of 9 sp chains knocking around so wondering if they’ll work with my 8sp winter bike.

    Yes - roller width is the same at 2.3mm, only the external width is different
    Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
