edited January 2011 in MTB buying advice
I posted at the start of December as was looking at getting a MTB and nearly got a Boardman Team or Pro.

Unfortunately I ended up having a seriously expensive Xmas so that plan got scrapped!

I've managed to borrow a Giant Rock 2007 which is awful but is allowing me to get pedalling! So I've decided that im going to buy parts (eBay mainly) and build the bike over a period of time.

Based on the fact I was going to get a Boardman Pro can any of you recommend a nice frame/forks to hunt for on EBay?

So post your ideas and suggestions?

Buying a bike complete will save money over building bit by bit.

The cheapest good fork is well known to be the RS Tora, getting the 318 is a good investment.

I am a big fan of Manitou stuff, they may not be as fashionable as fox/rs but always had the best damping circuits. The Drake is a nice fork and another good buy.
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?

    +1 to above

although I can understand you buying it bit by bit as you might not have a lump some atm.
And for frames look at ragley and on-one are pretty good, as are cove.

  • Yeah the reason is as I don't have a a lump sum I'm going to use the awful Giant Rock for a couple of months or so while I buy and build a bike.

So I'm ideally looking for a few good hard tail frame ideas and fork ideas, I'm looking at making a really lightweight xc ride.

    Thought so

so yeah just look about, they do framesets and bundles of all sorts at www.on-one.co.uk, if you could afford one of them, obviously the more you buy combined ie frame, fork. The cheaper it's going to be in the long run as they can get the components far cheaper than available to us.

  • I'll check it out!

Anyone got any ideas on second hand frame ideas?
  • So anyone got any eBay links on good buys for frames etc?
  • ebay>categories>sporting goods>cycling>bike parts.

filter on frames and mountain bike.

You could always check pinkbike for 2nd hand frames though.
  • I was really looking for more specific frames to target than just a lesson on how to search on eBay! Lol

What specifically are you after?! XC frame? Something that will take more hammer? For what length fork?

The more info you can give us on your budget, riding and ideas then the more we can tailor advice.
  • I'm looking at building a lightweight XC bike, not crazy length forks probably 100mm?

I'm also not a hardcore rider but want something that will be comfortable and good for a 10 mile or a 60 mile long distant ride.

I was looking at Boardman Pro so aiming to build something like that over a period of time.

OnOne Scandal, the Boardman frame or something from Handsome Dog would be my choice. Merlin do great deals on drivetrain parts and wheels. Then is a case of finding finishing kit - wellgo, exotic and onone all do good, cheap kit.

Forks are important - at least a Tora SL here.

Full Deore groupset, wheels and brakes:

Is a big chunk, but a hell of a lot of kit there for the money.
  • The Handsome Dog frames look very good value for money, are they any good?

Is there a model I should look out for?

on one are doing scandal frames for £135 and either toras or recons for £100 at the moment.

i was tempted myself but i need neither
  • Anyone think that full carbon frame is any good or just cheap rubbish that will break in 5secs???

    Heres the link again - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Full-Carbon-3K-Mo ... 51?afsrc=1

    +1

its was a case of " its so cheap, it would be rude no to". I was rude :(
  • The Scandal is a great frame and with the Tora 318 fork builds up into a very nice light fast bike. I'm very happy with mine and have used it as geared mtb, slick tyred commuter and currently as a winter SS.

If there still that price then thats a great deal ;)
Wow great ship man. Looks like a fish, flies like a fish, steers like a cow.
