triple chainset
I'm after a bit of advice,
At the moment my cube attempt runs a shimano tiagra 50/39/30 triple chainset with 172.5 cranks and a ultegra 10 speed rear mech and block.
The time has come to renew some of the chainrings and i'm keen to change the 50 for a 52.
My questions are;
1. can i just do this by buying(if i can get hold of one) a tiagra 52 chainring
2. Could i upgrade to a ultegra triple chainset which comes with a 52 outer
3. I will be fitting a new chain but will i have to keep the same length or add a link or 2.
Sorry if this a very basic question but i'd like to know how to spend my money wisely
cheers

1) You should be able to, assuming the BCD is the same. From what I've read, it's 130mm, so it shouldn't be an issue to find one at all.
2) Yes.
3) It'll have to be a few links longer. Doing a calculation online leads me to believe you'll need it to be 54 links long (so one full link longer than it is at the moment), but don't quote me on that. http://www.epicidiot.com/sports/chain_l ... ulator.htm
EDIT: You should also bear in mind you'll probably have to move your front mech up, and adjust the cable as necessary.0 -
Any 52 or 53 130 BCD ring will fit.

Assuming you have a Tiagra front derailleur, bear in mind Shimano lists its capacity - and that of a 105 triple FD - as 20 teeth. Ultegra will officially handle 22.
Shimano's typically conservative. I have an old Deore XT front derailleur on the tandem that handles 48/36/20 even though its only supposed to have a 22T capacity, but it does need very careful adjustment to make it work well.
Am I the only one who thinks Shimano's current triplesare idiotic by the way (and to be fair to Shimano, just about everyone else's)? 130/74 BCD hugely limits the possibilities, and given that compacts are all 110 why not give us 110/74 triples with modern bottom brackets.John Stevenson0 -
Thanks for the prompt replies folks.
So if i'm clear about this I should be able to change my chainset for a 6603 ultegra with 52 outer that i have my eye on in the sales.
To help stop any problems it would not hurt to change the front mech for a ultegra one while i'm at it.
And when i fit the new chain just double check the length and as jonmack says it may have to be 54 links.
Have i forgotten anything
Once again thaanks for your help guys.

Much of this is a foreign language to me (I think I really need a book on bike maintenance)
However if you are looking for an Ultegra front mech, Edinburgh bicycle are advertising one in their sale, that seems a good price.

Caution - I've no idea if that's the right one you need or not!

basing things on the existing chain length is risky unless you know it was correct (i never had a new bike with correct chain length)
shimano instructions usually say... with chain on biggest ring smallest cog, the chain length should be such that the axes of the jockey wheels are vertically in line, imho this can be on the generous side
a more generic method is - without running it through the rear mech, take the length of chain that wraps around biggest front and rear, then add one or two links
pictures of this method...

btw sheldon brown's site is a good place to pick up knowledge on how to maintain/repair/modify bikesmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
Thanks Pigtail and Sungod for the good advice
.i'll check out Edinburgh bicycle and Sheldon brown sites for the info i need.0
