Hi I am looking for a winter bike or a frame one size up from my very rideable Gios Torino.
Has anyone any info on the above? There is one on ebay, the seller thinlks it is steel but I didnt think Lemond made any steel frames, and is the bike any good?
If the Gios was a bit bigger I wouldn,t think of parting company

Lemond did produce steel bikes back in the 90s - before the Trek connection I think. They were very good frames, should make a decent winter bike if it is in good nick and has been looked after.0

They did indeed. I always lusted after the Alpe Duez model, resplendent in orange made of lovely steel. Never had the monies to buy it back then.Rock 'n' Roule0 -
Greg Lemond did a range of bikes before the Trek deal - there were 2 models, the GL and GLX, both in Excel steel tubing produced by Billato in Italy. They were quality bikes and had distinct geometry with fairly laid back seat-tube angles unlike most US frames of the era. Expect them to be an appreciating classic in comparison to the Trek stuff. The one on ebay is right of this era.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

I didn't know Billato made those, not surprised. A buddy had the GLX and back in 1998 it was sex on wheels. Record with 1st generation EP shifters. Royal blue with yellow faded windows mid way along the top, down and seat tubes. It will always look beautiful but let's be honest, they'll feel noodly and will be a lot heavier than cheap carbon. It'll have a lot of soul tho and in a stright line on a flat road, it'll ride like a comfy laz-E-boy chair.
They come up for sale a lot and there's a 55cm on on craig's list right now if you happen to live in SF, Oakland or Marin county. When a cyclist has a disagreement with a car; it's not who's right, it's who's left.0 -
Hi all, thanks for the very helpfull info. The bike really took my eye, and prefer steel for Lancshire winters - no suprise there. So unless there is a bidding war, hope to get it.
Guess Marin county is a bit too far for me Frans, but thanks for the comments
The Gios is steel but decent tyres on an old classic make all the difference - maybe my wife should think of getting me reshod.0 -
I rode the gl version blue and yellow it was probably the most comfy and resposive bike I ever owned and only my Litespeed Ultimate beat it for pure adrenalin rush!!!
Paintwork was brilliant drilled b/bracket for drainage and riding 23c cont`is it was pure joy on Cornwalls North Coast run.
Yes bikes of that ere were not light but to me now thats no longer an issue all the weight weenie stuff fails anyway...like my Litespeed..?0 -
Thanks, am getting keener on this bike by the minute......... for my 65th a couple of years ago now, had a very good spec. Dolan built with super wheels to get me up the Lancashire hills, this bike makes me smile every time I ride it, havent ridden any other carbon frames, but certainly would recomend Dolan to anyone, and it looks great.0
