Cranks not turning

Howdy, I was riding today and when pedalling the cranksgot very stiff and eventually became stuck in one position. After struggling to free them by pushing them backwards they would move again, but when I pedalled forwards it got to the same place then stopped again.

What's the cause and solution to this?

Probably the bottom bracket but could be other things so remove chain from front rings and rotate the cranks to check for stiff/notchy bearings. If it not that then check the chain for stiff links and check the rest of the transmission part by part.

The bottom bracket is kaput, if the chain had that many stiff links it would take the mech off.

I expect the bearings in the bottom bracket are shot.
