    I fancy this

Be a nice gentle start back on the bike after 9 months pretty much off it.

I'd be up for this - mid-Jan or anytime in Feb.

Depending on the date and starting point, permission sought for a soft, hybrid riding Londoner to attend? Inner tubes for 700x28 already stockpiled :)

Notsoblue - might, maybe, foolhardy and want to join yours........... possibly

You can come along for the ride but no stopping at every pub for a 'quick' Guiness, not that anybody owes you a pint
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Looks like mid Feb before there's enough daylight hours to start and finish in light, that said the last two years we've had deep snow here in Feb.

    hmmmm

What sort of notice to peeps need to get ready for a social ride?

Mid Feb looks good - 10 hours gives us time for pub stops - couple of days notice should be enough for me
  • this sounds like a great idea!,
I'd be up for it whenever

I've covered the Reading to 'somewhere just past hungerford' section of the canal previously (before having to turn round and ride back) - although my hard-gained knowledge of the pubs would likely be made irrelevant by the start time!

I'm Interested. But the most I've done in one day is 55miles on the road, that took me 5 hours, but I'm a bit fitter now. Would this be too much for me? Would I slow you all down? I ride a hybrid with 28s.

Pace will be sedate and distance is really up to you, if you feel the need there's plenty of train stations on route.

Don't you have to carry the bike at some point? That's my only concern as I have a right shoulder that's undergoing physio after years abuse of abuse/pain.

    I'll check it out though.

Sketchley, welcome fellow hybrid(er) + tyres :D. I did a L2B ride last summer and that took mucho hours with lots of pit stops. We'll be good company for each other plus Redvee owes me a pint and it looks like this is the only time I can collect :P

ITB - a couple of days notice works for me.

Ok looks like I'm in then! I have friends near Devies so worse case can bail out and head there. But I'm not one to give up easily.

Any weekend is good for me providing it doesn't clash Rugby , although I don't fancy 80miles in the rain. Best day in Feburary for me is Sat 26th, March 5th also good, 12th and 19th Possible.

Don't think it's that much cyclecross - more like sportive on varied terrain - hybrids come into their own on this one :)

I did this route but starting from London and carried on to Bristol. Two day trip with a stop in Hungerford. It took 9 hours from London to Hungerford. The 'best bit' IMO was actually the road section around IT's house (Marlborough/Hungerford) - amazing quite roads and lovely views.

I did it in mid-summer and the towpath was tough going in parts for my road bike - I had to get off and walk once or twice. It may not be suitable for a road bike in February. Have fun!

Thats me out then, very busy all summer and can't spare a day for this ride

Forgot about the walk over the top of the tunnel, was hard when we done it 20+ years back. Another spanner in the works is the fact we need permits to ride the canal IIRC. Solos or pairs it won't be a problem for the inspectors but a group racing along the tow path might cause problems. I have a cover story, sort of, as my Mum has a barge with BWB licence still so will use that as my excuse.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Nothing in this http://home.btconnect.com/kenavon/usefulinfo.pdf says you need a permit.

When I spoke with Mum about the matter she said you did or it might have been wether her BWB licence for the boat covered the cycling permit.

I think you do in theory need a permit but it is free to download so not a problem:

A good deal in Feb. I did it in summer on 25s. A bit filling rattling heading west towards Devises but generally OK. Just taking the stretch from Thatcham to Newbury, most of it is tree lined bare earth and unless it is dry between now and Feb it will be too wet and slippy for thin road tyres
