Out of the folloeing two wheelsets which would be deemed the better to have for general xc riding and commuting:
DT swiss 445d rims with Scott Front and Shimano 525 rear hub
or
Bontrager Ranger with Shimano M525 hubs.
I will be upgrading to XT or Hope Pro hubs with Mavic 317 or 717 rims later in the year, but for now i have been offered these.

I don't mind what they say... as long as they say its enormous

Why not use what you have now, and spend a bit more when you upgrade to get some better rims?
Out of those two I would go for the DT Swiss.
Give these a look too, very light for the money, but are meant to be pretty tough.

Thanks for the reply.
I am not having to pay for them.
They have been offered to me for nothing on my build, but need the wheels now.
They are to tide me over to the new year until i can get some greens.I don't mind what they say... as long as they say its enormous0 -
Ah, then go for the DT Swiss as I said, the rims are around 100g lighter, and the hubs are pretty much the same. And now you know, and knowing is half the battle
