A serious question for a change!

Can I convert a 1" threded steel fork / steel frame to 1" threadless aheadset?

i.e. remove steel fork and threaded headset.

Buy 1" carbon fork + 1 " aheadset and fit.....?

Anyone got any ideas/experience?

Cheers

G

I know you can get adaptor stems, with an expander bolt to fit into a threaded fork steerer, but allow an Aheadset stem to be fitted.

As for actually swapping a fork with a threaded steerer for one designed for an Aheadset, to start with, you would need to find a headset bearing that would fit into your head tube - I don't know whether the two systems use the same diameter, though. Assuming you can find a suitable bearing, then I can't see why it wouldn't work, but I'm guessing they are pretty rare.

EDIT: This one needs a Ø30.2mm cup in the head tube, so if you can measure your head tube accurately, you'll have an answer.

  • Yep.

To convert from threaded to A/Head you'll need...

    A head stem
    A head forks
    A head err headset

    That's pretty much it.

    @Mark,

Thanks for confirm - figured as much.

My only concern is frame steerer tube thickness and getting the 1" aheadset to fit.....

    It may be a guestimation!

1" threaded should be staright swap for 1" ahead.

I'm looking for a nice set of 1" carbon aero forks at the mo.

Surely threaded stems are prettier though.

 Having seen the pics of your new steed, I'll concede that an alloy quill stem would look a bit out of place.
