Using Mavic freehub on a Shimano hub

Can this be done?

The freehub on my shimano wheel has broke, so I was wondering if I could take a freehub off of a Mavic Aksium wheel and then put this on a Shimano hub from a Shimano R550 wheel.

Is this possible?

Thanks
Will

I'll just go take a freehub from an R550 wheel for free.

Then why ask the f%%cking question if you already have the correct freehub!!!???

Because it's only a matter of time before any of the 2 freehubs I can use will brake, so I thought, well might aswell use the one in best condition, the 2 that will fit make no clicking noise any more, they still freewheel tho.

Have you tried servicing them? A clean and a little bit of grease on the pawls might sort them out.
    More problems but still living....

I have no idea how to take them apart and and if it requires more special tools then I have no intention of doing it.

You could use google instead of posting on here?

Then again for the sake of £20, is it worth servicing it?

Nothing stopping you from using Google rather than these forums too.

I'm not asking a question about the compatibility of freehubs though...

If I want to use a forum to ask about the compatibility of freehubs I will do just that...

If you want to change the freehub body you will expose the pawls. So you may as well clean them.

In fact is this a wind up? or are you really a massive cretin in day to day life?

Not on Shimano he won't. And they are a nightmare to service beyond flushing out and re-lubeing.

    Oh the irony...................................

If you would be so grateful please kindly **** off out of my threads and never post a single piece of text in them because the only silly cretin wind up merchant here is you.

    Thanks.

Think there's a place for people who don't have a clue how to fix a bike related problem, it's called your LBS

By that I mean, don't take a freehub apart if you're not sure what you're doing as sometimes the pawl springs let go as you open it etc. Some freehubs need grease, some not - ie. Mavics.

Your local mechanic will probably charge a pittance and you watch him do it, you'll know for next time.
  • I used to work in a shop and quite often we would sell mavic wheels that had the wrong freehub body for the customer. Our mechanics would just swap out from another mavic wheelset. So yet it is as straightforward as you think, be very careful when removing the freehub body though. The springs holding the pawls in place are loaded and very small. A real PITA if one flies away on you.
  • Mavic-type freehub swap from Shimano fitment to Campag fitment is, as you say, straight-forward if a little tricky. The OP was asking about swapping a Shimano freehub for a Mavic-type freehub, which are not compatible, as was stated earlier.
