Hello, got a quick questions for you folks :D A colleague of mine is selling a 2004 Specialized Rockhopper (mechanical disc) in pretty good condition. He's upgraded it with the following:

XTR shifters
XT mech
mavic wheels
FSR crank

All for an asking price of £400. On eBay, 2010 and 2009 Rockhoppers (with hydraulic discs) go between £250-£350, but he's told me £400 is good value considering the upgrades. I don't have a great background in MTBing so am asking for help - is this a good deal?

    How old are the upgrades?

XTR shifter are a bit of overkill on such a bike.
XT mech is about £45 new.
Mavic wheels - could be anything from £100 a set new
FSR crank - I guess you mean FSA? - from £70 new.

I paid £70 for a 2003 Rockhopper 2 months ago (I reckon that was a very good deal).
I felt the most important upgrades were forks (I got Tora u-Turn £100) and hydraulic brakes (Clarks £72 CRC). Better forks might have been Recon Silver TK - £125 @ Merlin

What he said. Sounds a lot.
I'd go for the newer models and upgrade the forks if necessary. Think they have Darts which are pretty heavy.

You can get a brand new 2010 model for about £550, with hydraulic discs, 27speed deore, new forks and a warranty! That sems way too expensive. £200 max is a fairer price, unless it is somethjing very special.
  • Agree with the above, seems alot!
  • When I look at that it does seem excessive.

THIS IS NOT A SALE BY THE WAY.

I am looking for around £400 for my 2010 Spesh Rockhopper SL.

Asking that for a 2004 just seems ridiculous.
  • 400 for that bike is stupid. Even with upgrades you never get what you paid for them back.

Crazy price to be honest, you could buy a standard 2004 for £120 or less and add those bits for another £250 (new - about £150 used as these are).

    £250 absolute top whack.

I bought my Mrs a 2008 hopper comp recently for £350 that had rebas, juicy 5 and xt mech. Those upgrades are not where to spend money. Brakes and forx should have been more of a priority.

Brilliant, thanks for the help guys! :D it was what I suspected. If the 2010 were going for £200-£300, a 2004 going for £400 seemed dear even considering the upgrades. :?

£400 for that bike - upgrades or no upgrades - is ridiculous
