can i run a 11-28 cassette with a 6600 (ultegra) or 5600 (105) rear mech? The shimano site says you need the newer 6700 / 5700 mechs for a 11-28 and max for the older mechs is a 27 tooth.

thanks, Ed

    it's hit and miss ed

some frames and chain tension will manage it but some won't, even with the tension screw on max. I speak from experience. I've got 6600 mechs to handle 11-28 but I've had others end up rubbing the top sprocket, no matter what.

You can either try and see, or go for the 5700/6700 mech and it'll definitely work.

I agree, you can try it and see - I fitted a 11- 28 to an old Ultegra gruppo and it worked fine
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • No problems with 11-28 on Ultegra 66series (triple) using a long-cage rear derailleur.

Just wish Shimano would make a 13-28 as 11-28 is ridiculous for a normal cyclist!
