Student "demonstrations", discuss.

this is amusing...
_50371210_50371207.jpg

for the unaware these two were driven straight through part of the demo in a massive rolls royce, genius.
then were surprised when the car was attacked, covered in paint and windows smashed.

As a colonial, I believe if someone tries to trash my car, Rolls or not, I should be allowed to blow them away.

it is mindless violence, but im glad how these two cotton wooled idiots have seen a glimpse of what is really happening.
  • im a student, and i just think that the ones who are protesting violently are complete morons.

all they do is piss people off, and alienate people who might have an inkling for supporting the campaign, silly protesters.

all they do is wee-wee people off, and alienate people who might have an inkling for supporting the campaign, silly protesters.

Seconded.... Shame that the media are more intent on covering the stupid behaviour of a small minority rather than properly discuss the fair concerns of the overwhelming majority.
  • on the one show couple of nights ago there was an interview with students who thought that the protestors were just damaging the cause. but that doesnt get shown on the main news

i guess a balanced arguement is out of the question, much more interesting to paint all students with 1 shitty brush
  • Don't see the problem tbh. Students have been well and truly screwed over by the Lib Dem's.

Its about time someone tried to stand up to the Government, they don't listen either way... at least they're looking.

Riots + protests are the only things I like about the French. They don't take much crap.

i think it's a disgrace, if the car had not got away what then? drag them out and kick fcuk out of them? and why the black guys on the news going on about dealing drugs on the street if they can't afford the fees....so you turn up to a "peaceful" protest wearing baseball caps and covering your faces with bandanas and you're not there to be violent....i guarantee that a lot of the youths there are only there to cause havoc.

oh, and anyone attacking any of the royal family in any way should be shot....and i'm not pro royal family....

this time (biased media view, to be fair) it looks as if it was more students and less anarchists/vegitarians.

couldnt help but laugh at one report.
a gang of masked cockney yoofs saying they wont be able to go to uni and the EMA was the only thing keeping em at college, and whats stopping them just going and selling drugs on the streets.

    erm.... morals perhaps?

And this is the main problem i have with all of it. Watching the BBC news earlier gives of this impression that everyone there was just out for a fight and for mindless violence.

The reality of it is that the majority were on a peaceful demonstration.
Also, the way they made out like the students were causing many police casualties and conveniently had clips of police being attacked whilst omitting all of the disgusting police violence towards the protesters.
To be perfectly honest if you want to achieve a violent protest then driving a police van into a crowd of people at 30 odd is a pretty good way to go about it. So much of the violence from protesters was just reaction to police 'crowd control'.

Violent protest just undermines any legitimate argument the protesters have. Violence is violence in any form, we condemn groups like the edl for their methods and this is the same. Freedom if speech does not extend to freedom to trash peoples stuff or intimidate people. I wonder how many people hijack this in order to cause trouble?

I don't condone violence (especially regarding the OP) but the protests are justified.

Bet you'd sing a different tune if it was your car getting trashed, or you getting beaten up.

Every sympathy with most of the students, unrealistic as their demands may be, that's the joy of being young and stupid. But if people want to arrange demonstrations they need to be able to marshal and control them and take responsibility for the consequences.

You say that the Students demands are unrealistic but the only people who were being unrealistic were the lib dems with their promises of abolishing tuition fees if they were elected.

I think that for a lot of people it's not just the fact that the tuition fees are going up but that the parties can bullsh*t their way into power then u-turn on the policies that people voted for them on.

Errrr the Lib Dems didn't win. They lost. Even with my vital vote.

Demonstrate by all means. Down with the man, tear down the system, power to the people, etc etc etc.

    Just don't trash things.

everyone thinks the lib dems are in power, they are not, just one of them gets his face in a few pictures, the tories are in power.

ive said before and i stil blieve that folk at uni doing science, medical or engineering subjects should get their tuition free. if those students fail their courses, they should be made to pay back what their tuition has cost the tax payer.

everyone else should pay the entire cost of their course.

this stops people going to uni to avoid having a bath or doing any work.

as for the violent potests, i think they should be shot, especially at the point that they are attacking the royal family.

Well i was up there yesterday, it was mental, i was not demonstrating i was working.
One of the Engineers i was meeting had his car jumped on and his wipers pulled off and his aerial broken off. (not the act of educated people) it was more like a scene from whipsnade than a demo.

I personally back the idea of raising fee's, that way not every tom dick and harry can go to university like its a given right! you should have to work to get there!
(now before i get shot down here) I also believe that talented individules who cant afford to go should get some sort of grant or reduced fee's. Go back 10-20 years and this is what is was like, so when people actually got a degree it meant something. Nowadays everyone has a degree and it means nothing to employers.

  • I love how everyone is always surprised when there is violence at a demonstration that affects lots of people, especially when it comes to money.

    Welcome to the world.

Personally i'm actually glad Charles and his mrs' car was attacked. Firstly they are among the wealthy who would not be effected by the tuition rise. It's people who arn't royal family or among the high payed familes who have to deal with this. They also drove straight through protests in a giant Rolls Royce. Plain dumb.

    + abso-fucking-lutely truck-loads of potatoes.

tbh, I think it may end up heading more this way anyway. The most popular courses (read 3 year holidays) will see big price rises in relation to the massive number of applicants, whereas the undersubscribed science and engineering, medical, proper courses will either have govt subsidies, or will drop prices.

It should also stop people like my sister in law, who went to uni because she had nothing better to do, racked up thousands of pounds of student debt, then left uni, got married, and now does not work. Meaning student load never needs to be paid back by her, the rest of us cover it instead.

If you go to uni, you should be going there to study something worthwhile that will benefit your chosen career path. If you don't know what you want to do yet, go get a job and earn some money while you think about it. Then you'll never need to piss and moan about how hard you've got it because the country dosent hand your education to you on a plate.

Of course, all that said and done, my kids will have uni paid for because the manx govt still does that. So I've not really got any right to comment.

I think that they should put the fee's even futher to pay for the damage...there are allways fookwits that spoil it for all so some students will get tared with the same brush....protests fine...violence no thanks..the police should use tasers, plastic bullets etc

I saw a clip of them trashing Top Shop...what good is that..and how is that fair, it is just mindless hoodlems..yep they should be shot...thing is if one of the scumfuckbags got killed etc...it would be inquiry after inquiry with the police being blamed for mindless excess force...foookdat...can I join the police of a temporary basis so I can go down to London to help a peaceful protest (with riot gear and a big stick..obviously)

I agree they should pay there way, perhaps fee's based on future earnings would be fairer..they all whinge and moan about money...put come Friday night they will all be in the uni bar getting lashed up...

Just as a point of interest about students "wasting" taxpayers money on their education....graduates, on average, earn more than non-graduates. The extra tax paid due to that wage difference, over a lifetime, more than pays for all university education. If you stop people going to uni, you're taking money out of the public purse. So do you want a richer country or do you want to stop people getting an education?

As it happens I don't really agree with the violence, but I think it's very telling that within months of a Tory government getting into power and starting to hack away at public spending, we're seeing mounted police charging at protestors. When was the last time we saw that in this country? Even with football trouble the mounted police are just there to intimidate rather than actually charge people.

This. What properly concerns me thing though is why on Earth would any sane intelligent young person WANT to be a scientist/doctor/engineer (to a lesser extent). Given the gaping salary gap between people who work in finance and people at a similar level the sciences these individuals are essentially being penalised by the propspect of a lifetimes worth of debt in a poor job climate.
