Hi all,
I've been looking at getting a set of wheels around the £300 mark as a upgrade for my RS10's that are std fitment on my bmc streetfire, so far the ultegra 6700's take my eye but it suddenly dawned on me" what if i'm to heavy for them?".
I'm currently around the 88-90kg mark (unfit weight) but am hoping to drop 5kg's by the summer lol.
Can any of you knowledgeable people on here recomend me a set of wheels that look nice/are fairly light and will be strong enough for my weight?
Would like aero spokes if possible and preferably a silent running hub (asking a lot i know ).
Thanks in advance.

As an 80kg rider who has been in your weight range, the factory ultegra wheels will be strong enough. What makes more of a difference is how carefully you ride. Do you look ahead and ride around obstacles (pot holes, kerbs etc.) or if avoiding is not possible, unweight the wheels? Or do you you just plough straight on through anything that's in your way? If you find it's the latter (even unintentionally) then get some high (32 or 36) spoke count hand build wheels built on ultegra hubs. I use Mavic CXP33 rims on ultegra hubs for every day use on my SSX and they've been great for the past 3-ish years. They can be built with Sapim or DT aero spokes and I'd guess they'd be less than £300.
  • At £300 you're surely going to be buying RS80's?

(Which will take your weight easily)

I see they offer Ambrosio Zenith hubs as an option
    Avoid this option!

Makes me somewhat dubious about them as a supplier, but YMMV

Eh! I've had my pair for two winters now and have been superb - I'll probably need to put some new bearings in the front hub after this winter but for the money I think they're great value.

BTW - I've got three pairs of wheels built by wheelsmith and they've been bombproof - and that includes a pair of carbon wheels

    No 88kg isn't Fat lol.
At 6ft tall and between 88-90kg i'm not fat either! I reckon if i loose more than 5 kg i will look ill!
Had a look on Merlin just now and they have the RS80's @ £319.99 with a 10% discount till midnight tonight....is that a bargain as i have no idea about wheels lol.
Are these better than Mavic Ksyrium equipe/elites?

    Thanks .

I weight 85kg - it was more, and have Fulcrum 7's 1's and American Classic 420's - never had a broken spoke in any of them

Fulcrum 3 here, 88Kg (down from 93) with MTB full sus mentality...no issues at all in 8 months on Hertfordshire leafy lanes...

Had a set of Open Pros (32h) before on 105 hubs and they can take some beating...

Another 85kg one, you shouldn't have a problem with any wheel, 7850s, RS80s and SLs... never had a problem with them weight wise!
  • What about fulcrum 3's at £275 ? Any good??

    preferably a silent running hub

Your OP would probably rule out Fulcrum, judging by the ones I have ridden (7 and 5)

  • I'm over 90(not age, weight) and I've been using hope hoops which you can pick up for £299. No as cool as some as they're a 32 hole hub on an mavic open pro, but once they have a tweak from a good wheel builder then they'll stay as true as a lib dem politician on student fees..
  • oh sh*t done it again and not read original post in full. The rear hope hub is well noisy but what a beautiful noise.

Don't know about silent hubs but I was racing open pros on ultegra hubs at 104 kilos. I wish I had your svelte frame.

I had some difficulties with lighter spokes ( I kept breaking them) and broke a few spokes on Shimano factory wheels (but these were cheapo 550s). Decent spokes and plenty of them!

100kg and use roval fusee e5 1500g wheels 20/24 spoke and hold up perfectly- £225

braccianos are about the same weight and price and are handbuilt so also worth considering

I had a pair made up with a new bike in 2007
Late 2007 the bearings were completely destroyed
Replaced them, same thing 3 months later
Replaced them again, then the pawl spring broke
Replaced the entire hub with a new one, replaced the bearings after 6 months. Then (and this was the final straw) checked the bearings before a 1,000km event. They were fine and plush. Did one day of which was rainy and the hub went loose as it did when the bearings were damaged.

So I have not have good experiences with 2 different Zenith hubs over 3 years.

You comment that "they work for me" is quite common btw, maybe I just got two duff hubs

I now have a Hope Pro 3 hub instead, this is supposed to be one of the most weather proof hubs around. And noisey, the OP shouldn't consider it if they want a quiet one

I've sets of 6600's, 7850CL Dura-ace, Ksyrium Elites and a pair of Braciano's. I really like the Braciano's actually and at £175 from Ribble they're the best value pair of wheels I own. Smooth running, fairly quiet though not the quietest and I've not had any brake rub on climbs at all. They look good, in an understated way and I've ridden them in fairly bad conditions as they're kinda my winter wheels. Of course they're hand built so should be serviceable.

I've never broken a spoke on any wheels and I ride between 70 & 150 miles per week but I don't race and I'm pretty careful of pot holes etc. I ride with some big guys and none of them have ever broken a spoke either, even on cheap wheels like Fulcrum 7's or R500's. Think how you ride is more important. My weight varies between 73 & 78kg by the way

    Hope this helps?
