Speedplay Question???

Morning,

I'm looking for a new pedal and shoe combination. My shoes are too narrow and I've not been very impressed with my Keos from day one. I like the idea of being able to adust the float of the pedals so quite fancy the speedplay zeros. I have noticed that they have an adapter plate for three hole shoes which 99% seem to be. I'm struggling to find a single pair of four hole shoes. Does anybody have any experience of the adapter plates that allow mounting on a three hole shoe? I don't like the sound of an adapter plate as they were clearly designed for four hole shoes. Any comments would be much appreciated.

Tom

ive been using them on 3 hole shoes for years. they come with the adaptor plate and IMO its a benefit over using 4 hole shoes as it allows the plate to remain in place when changing cleats.

it is not a big deal and does not affect performance.

The only 4-hole shoes I know of are made by Lake but are very difficult yo source in the UK. I have been using them on Northwave Aerlites for 3 years with absolutely no problems - the adapter plate is at most 2mm thick and the combination of the adapter plate and cleat gives you a huge range of positioning options for your cleat (whether that's a good thing or not, I'll leave up to you :) )

The guys at Cyclefit recently found a custom adaptor plate made for Saxo which allows the cleats to be set further back. They found certain shoes were drilled too far fwd for some of their customers and this plate allows a greater range of adjustment. BTW the 3 hole adaptor works fine

wiggle have some lake cx401 in stock with speedplay fitting...

...pricey though, there's also the 330, but all out of stock

as the others say, they work fine with the plates, i've got two pair of shoes with zero cleats, specialized and sidi

using the plates also means if you have more than one pair of shoes the stack height stays about the same, if there were one pair 4-hole and one 3-hole i'd probably have to adjust seat height every time i changed shoes

By using a 4-hole drilled sole you'll be shedding a fair amount of weight and you will be able to lower your seat by a few mm. For those reasons I have been trying for a while to find Speedplay specific shoes that fit me, without having to go custom. I have narrow feet and the Lake and DMT shoes are too wide for me. But if you have relatively wide feet those would be great choices.

I think Bont do 4 bolt shoes.
  • I wouldnt worry about 4 hours. 2 pairs of shoes both 3 hole and both fine with zero cleats. Loving the speedplay zero's after years of single sided pedals. Just watch the wear on the cleat and grip on the floor at coffee stops! Also gravel.....

  • Thank you all for the responses, very helpful indeed. I have odd shaped feet, only certain shoes are comfortable but the three/four holes is not now worrying me at all. Thanks again, Tom
