22t chainring with 10 speed XT

I've just ordered a full 10 speed XT setup (11-36) and due to the 24t chainring the low gear is pretty much the same (marginally higher) than 9 speed 11-34. I have read that you can use a 22t chainring from a 9 speed setup instead and shimano acknowledge this but it was only a very brief comment.
I'm not sure I will do this anyway but I do have a spare M970 XTR 22t ring and just want to know if it is something I could do in future if I feel the need and any issues it might cause. Otherwise I guess someone will produce a more suitable aftermarket one to suit.
It will be on a 29er, hence the usefulness of lower gearing.

Many of these combos are still untried, or details scarce on the ground. It should work, but the dynasis chainrings are thinner.
More details will unfold with compatibility over time. We have a basic guide in the FAQ on major issues.0 -
Rather than be the first to try it and risk wrecking a new chain and/or chainring, I think I'll leave it to someone else to experiment first. No doubt someone over the pond will do so soon if they haven't already, 29ers being big over there (pardon the pun). I'm pretty sure if a thinner chainring is needed someone will bring an aftermarket one out soon as the 22/36 combination appeals to many 29er riders.Santa Cruz Tallboy0
