SRAM & Shimano compatability

I have a carrera vulcan disc 08 with an 8 spd sx4 rear derailleur/cassette/shifter.

I am looking to upgrade this to 9 speed, halfords parts only as I can get frre labour there.

I was wondering, however, if I could use Shimano parts out back with still a SRAM front derailler/shifter/ ctrankset and more importsntly, chain.

I know its in the wrong section, but any recommendations, I'm looking at X-7 at the moment but may use Shimano if its compatable

you will need a Sram shifter if you want to keep the rear mech.
a new cassette and a new chain.
