What's your budget? And what size is the seatpost? And what do you want it to do?

I'm a big fan of the Ragley Mmmbop- cheap as chips and great fun. But quite a specialised bike.

  • Carbon 456 and some revelations. You should just about be able to afford all that.

Get an Mmmbop and the best fork you can, and spend the rest on hookers.

This, or a standard 456 if you can't get an Mmmbop

The Fe always gets excellent reviews

    or an mmmbop

I loved my Soul and I was planning on getting a BFe til I tried the Bop- but it does depend what you want. If you want a real allrounder, a Soul with a good height-adjustable 140mm fork in is absolutely mint, there's not much else that competes. I don't think there's been another product that's made the Dirt 100 3 years in a row and that's a DH magazine so for a big XC bike to achieve that is just mad (maybe Highrollers have, or Orange Fives) The 456 does the same job but cheaper and less well, but great for the price. Not ridden a plastic 456 but I bet it's good.

Then you get the Mmmbop, which can still do allrounder stuff respectably well but mainly it's for laughing in the face of death on  But neither way's better or worse, just depends what you're after. There's other bikes that do the same job but not at the price, the competition all comes in 3 or 4 times more expensive and not, IMO, any better. Mine is my official XC bike but I've not found anything I wouldn't ride it down, I'll be taking it up to fort william next time and I want to do an innerleithen uplift on it next year too, but at the same time I'll take it round blue routes and local XC rides.

And if you're not sure what you're after, then get something like a 456- cheap, practical, versatile, and either it'll do the job you want it to do or it'll fail but afterwards you'll know what you want the replacement to do, and then you can sell it on for 3/4s of what you paid for it.

    Thus spake Northwind.
