What are we wearing this winter?

During Tuesday evenings ride, I came to the very cold conclusion that my usual winter gear may not be up to the job of keeping me warm anymore and I need some ideas so, for the very cold weather, how are you dressing to keep warm and dry?

For reference, I'm currently wearing:

Castelli Winter hat (under helmet.)
Buff around my neck,
A L/S merino baselayer,
An Altura Softshell (which needs replacing anyway as it's seen better days.)
DHB Merston Bib tights,
DHB Winter gloves (I had numb fingers at the end on my ride)
Merino socks (2 layers) Sealskinz socks, shoes and Pro windproof/waterproof shoe covers. (Numb toes also.)

Cheers,

Johnny

    Howies merino mid layer
    Rapha softshell jacket

    For commuting

    SS merino base
    Endura bib shorts
    Gore Windstopper Action bibtights
    LS merino base
    Paramo Velez breathable coat
    windstopper headband
    woolly socks
    MTB goretex shoes
    neoprene overshoes
Trekmates fleecey gloves (from the hiking shop)

And if it is raining heavily I have waterproof overtrousers
If it might be dry for the day then the Paramo might be swapped for an Assos 851 jacket+ a gilet

It's all good except for the overshoes which have holes in them, leading to wet feet :(

I reccommend Buffalo Clothing. in really cold weather, not very stylish but very warm.
    Good in rain or shine.

The heavier Shirt a bit too warm unless around freezing even with no base layer.

The lighter one has a larger temp range and can be combined with base layer down to around 2 or 3 degrees.

They dry quickly and have plenty of vent zips.

Best bit is how wind proof they are so even when hot when you descend a hill the chill is not that bad.

    Windproof to 40mph!

    Anyone else use them?

It looks like I'll be spending the winter in the North West Lake District and so far this week, it's been very, very cold on my evening rides.

I can feel a spend coming on and hopefully this'll give me some ideas of what to buy!

Thanks for all the input so far everyone!

Endura Baa Baa base layer OR Craft windproof base layer
Santini Liquigas long sleeve heavyweight jersey
    Santini Liquigas Breezewall Jacket
    Santini Liquigas bib tights
    Santini Liquigas gloves
    Santini Liquigas overshoes
Santini Liquigas thermal headband OR hat
    Woolie Boolie socks

I got caught out in my summer gear at the top of Alpe d'Huez in my summer gear. There was a blizzard and it was -5! Had to call in the bike shop to get some kit to get me back down.

They had some Santini windstopper Liquigas gloves in the bargain bin so I bought them. I was very skeptical as they are pretty thin and I have bad circulation in my hands but they are bloody ace!! Don't use my other gloves now, shame they clash with all my other kit!

I also get very cold feet and am tempted to get some of the Santini windstopper overshoes...
  • Saw someone on the club ride with a rapha belgium style winter hat so keen to buy one but not the Rapha one at £35, anyone know of other brands of those winter type hats?

this winter I shall mostly be wearing....

Howies l/s merino or HH Lifa base
Giordana Bodyclone FR Carbon jacket or Lusso Jura, depending on temp
Lusso Max Repel or Milano bibs over bib shorts
    Endura merino socks/BBB neoprene overshoes
    Assos or Endura winter gloves
    Fleece buff or wooly hat

All tried & tested - no issues with any of it. The Giordana jacket is pricey, but worth every penny...
  • Assos fugu jacket
rohan merino long sleeve base layer
    Assos s5 shorts
    Assos 851 bib tights
Assos winter gloves with inner gloves and if its really cold like -6 then marmotte mountain wear over gauntlets,
    Assos winter socks
    Assos roubaix skull cap
    mountain wear balaclava
sidi winter boots with furry lining and
knackerd shimano overshoes - coz i,m skint from buying all that assos and sidi gear.

but better knowledge than 30 years ago when i used roast chicken bags to keep the feet warm.

and i,ll be riding a 2008 kona sutra with full mudgaurds and 40 spoke wheels, with winter touring tyres and a triple chainset bike weight about 40 kgs. :

just tried some over shoes the other day and am glad i did. feet should be ok below freezing now. my very cheap raleigh gloves are amazing as well and very tough. the name still means quality.

DHB amberley 2010 gloves (fingers get cold still)
DHB Pace roubaix padded bib tight
    2 pairs of socks
    DHB mtn bike shoes
    Craft jersey
    HH base layer top
    Aldi cycling jacket (so warm)
little brothers nike skull cap hat / beanie thingy, under helmet

My body is nice and toasty in this gear. My feet get really cold still on longer rides, so I think I need some overshoes of some sort. My fingers also get cold, I was considering getting some merino gloves instead of these DHB ones which I don't think are that great.
