Has anyone been notified of a recall on a wide range of 2010/11 Cannondale bikes?

I got a message from the folks I bought my CAAD9 from earlier this year to say there was a problem with brake cables, but I can't find anything on Cannondale's website or on the net, other than an article on the Tredz blog dated 11th October.

  • have a look here but the date is not relevant to your problem, unless its a mix up on tredz site ?

  • Ah, I got a voicemail about it, and then forgot to phone them back or go in and see what it was about. Then they phoned me again, but was in a lecture so had to leave it, and then forgot to phone them back. :?

I really must pop into the shop tomorrow to see about it. If the chances of the cable snapping or whatever are pretty low then I think I'll just leave it. I spent a lot of time nailing the bartape job.

Is that the bit on the frame that the brake cables go through?

What exactly do they mean by the "head of the brake cables"?
  • Wouldn't that be the wee bit at the end that gets pulled in the shifter?

Don't take the risk last for the same of a pair of £4 cables! I had a gear cable end go on my Ultegra right hand shifter. Funnily enough it was on a Cannondale but was a Gore Ride on aftermarket cable. The end got stuck and I had to take the STI off and give it to an 'expert' to get out. It was very lucky he was successfull l as I've heard of a few people having to replace their STI's :(

A recall of bikes, because of brake cables?

Jesus H Christ, just post out some brake cables and get people to swap them themselves
  • just post out some brake cables and get people to swap them themselves.
I'm tempted to ask my LBS to do this. mainly just because I can't be arsed changing the wheel/tyre on the CAAD to ride it to the shop. Besides, it's right beside my uni so it'd be easier for me to pick up as I'm there pretty much daily. Futhermore(!), I don't want to ride my pretty bike to uni.
  • I just got the "brake cable recall" message yesterday for the SuperSix I got in September.

Alas i got the bike from Evans so I'm a bit tentative about their ability to change a brake cable, given once I got my new bike home, I had to sort out my gears myself, and fix the fork tension, etc...
  • Update on this.......

I bought my CAAD9 online from Wheelbase in June. Came well fettled and no issues re adjustments. They have now sent a replacement set of cables (as FleshTuxedo suggested) but have blithely told me I can fix it myself or get them replaced at my LBS at my own cost.

    WTF????

I can't imagine buying ANY other retail product where you have to fix a manufacturing defect at your own cost less than six months into ownership. (Not to mention I'm handless in the technical area  )

Have sent a stinker to both Wheelbase and Cannondale UK so will see what they have to say for themselves.

  • Further update.....

Cannondale's UK agent CSG have recovered things well - got an immediate response from their Warranty guys, directing me to my LBS where the cables will be replaced FOC.

They also apologised for the offhand treatment from Wheelbase.

They couldn't possibly suggest that the owner replace faulty parts themselves, especially after a RECALL......the legal ramifications of such a suggestion should an accident ensue don't bear thinking about. The costs could be enough to put a manufacturer out of business.

Can you imagine Toyota sending out accelerator pedals and telling their customers to fit them themselves..........................!

Recalls are expensive full stop. For the manufacturer to leave themselves open to legal action down the line would be unthinkable. As you say, teddies out the cot, letter and correct result. I suspect the supplier you initially spoke to was not quite on the same song sheet as the importer/ manufacturer.

  • Evans changed my cables while I waited, and I got them to slip in a few extra tweaks for free while I was there. All in all a productive morning.

Yeah I guess the retailer are doing a favour to the manufacturer here, and they'll then have to claim the costs back from cannondale. All a bit of a faff from their point of view.

And probably (I dont' know) due to some dude sueing due to a cable snapping, which does happen from time to time...
