i know alot has been said over various forums about UST and tubeless.

but just asking to clarify my understanding.

you can run UST rims + UST tyres (without sealant) but nothing to stop punctures
you can run UST rims + UST tyres (with sealant) to protect against punctures
you can run UST rims + standard tyres (with sealant) works the same

am i right in thinking this.

    for the most part yes.

i would tend to disagree in some part to the idea of using ust rims and regular tyres.

it can be done but i wouldnt (gajillions of people do though). when i have tried regular tyres on a tubeless rim they have been a nightmare to inflate and seal then a nightmare when you turn a corner and they burp a load of air or pop staight off the rim.

this is just my experience of coures, there are loads for whom regular tyres have worked perfectly.

i would add that ust rims are good but i find a conversion kit such as stans or joes to be just as reliable (but only when using tyres designed to be run as tubeless)

a proper ust tyre will be heavy as hell, my advice is to use a tubeless ready tyres. these require sealant to work but a reliable tubeless set up needs sealant in there any way in my opinion.

looking at buying specialized tyres, is it worth paying the extra nearly £20 to get the armadillo tyres?

i would buy the second one. they are my favourite tyres and i run them with sealant as tubeless tyres. they are grippy, light, quick and cheap.

i bought my last tyres from there as well and even though i dont use tubes, a free one with each tyre is a nice bonus.
  • thanks alot for your help!

In 99% of cases the Control versions are plenty tough enough.

That said, I use S-Works versions and haven't had a failure with them yet.....
