Same clothing approach with upper layers. Base layer will go in the wash after every ride, jacket usually hung up and used for a 2nd ride before going in the wash.
Many riders never smell the felt strips inside their bike helmets either. I keep two lids (well three if you include off-road) and particularly in the summer alternate between rides to give the lids a chance to recover or wash said felt strips.
Nowt worse than standing in a cake stop queue and thinking about the rider next to you "christ you fuc41ng stink!" and it happens far too often.
Good to know none of this applies to folks on here.
Load of rubbish, you must not wash properly and it can be worse having underwear under shorter than none.0 -

Boxers are too bulky under cycling shorts.
Any advice on cheap underwear, especially for long days in the saddle when the Y's begin to cut me across the cheek.
Jesus Christ on a bike. Absolutley priceless!Rock 'n' Roule0 -

The old saying was 'a true Scotsman never wears anything under his kilt' . Many Scotsman see the kilt as an invention of Sir Walter Scott and just a Victorian fashion, so, wouldn't wear the bloody thing anyway.
I appreciate that going commando is pretty common amongst cyclists but I feel a bit 'loose' around the crown jewels with nothing on under. I've had the chaffing on long rides wearing Y's so know they're no use.
What about these cycling specific undershorts?
Sounds like you need some better fitting shorts.
Nah, it's not that. Just feels a bit weird commando. Maybe I need to try it out again
Would suggest getting a decent pair of Assos shorts, with a decent chamois insert. Get a local bike shop to help find you a pair that fit you snugly (i.e. Reasonably right).
Use chamois insert cream between skin and the shorts (assos again make a good one).
Pair of winter tights over the top when it is cold.
Adjust FRED into a comfortable position before getting on the bike.
Ps. Wearing underwear will definitely give you saddle sores, as will wearing shorts more than once without washing them. Having a third testicle because of an infection is not pleasant (speaking from experience 20 years ago).Summer - Dolan Tuono with Sram Force and Dura-Ace 7850 CL Carbon wheels

Glasgowbhoy, you and the other undies proponents need to get the idea right out of your heads that there is anything pervy about not wearing underwear with your cycling shorts.
People who choose not to don underwear when wearing jeans or a suit are an entirely different matter, and probably are pervs or at best amnesiacs, but you must strive to desexualize and destigmatize the way ALL serious cyclists wear their shorts, i.e. next to the skin.
Cycling as a sport is demanding on the bod, and if you have sense you wear what you need to in order to remain comfortable and perform efficiently. And just be grateful you've not taken up ballet dancing or Sumo wrestling instead of cycling.0 -
80km today commando and no probs
Just more washing of the bibs required and prob the purchase of a 2nd set of padded winter tights required.

Glasgowbhoy, i can sympathise.................
It was about 2 degrees yesterday and I was commando, but after coming in from my ride My balls had shit inside me and thought my bell end was going to fall off. Yhis was wearing bibtights with shorts over them!!!

What nonesense!
Cycling pads / chamois are designed to sit next to the skin, hense many now have anti bacterial properties built in. Adding another layer just gives you an opportunity for chafing! And as for 'tucking the undercarriage up out of the way', if you can't do this in lycra shorts anyway I suggest they are too big for you!0 -
1) If you wear cycling shorts more than once without washing you won't DEFINITELY get an infection. That's just plain daft. I often do, have been doing for years and have had zero infections.
2) Cycling specific underwear can be perfectly comfortable. I rode for years wearing Polaris undershorts under my bibs and had no issues at all (I did PBP like this - 72 hours and 1200km without a change of shorts/undershorts). I then discovered proper fitting shorts/tights and no longer need the undershorts.
3) If you NEED Assos shorts and Assos chamois cream then there's something seriously wrong with your bike set-up.More problems but still living....0 -

That product is so wrong, in so many ways and wouldn't the drawstring cut off the blood?
Reminds me of how they get rid of lamb's tails.0 -
After a cold winter ride, l am regularly astonished to look at the microscopic and pathetically shrivelled flap of skin where my w*lly was two hours before. A drawstring pouch that big would be wasted on me.
Surely it's not just me who has this problem?0 -
Many years ago, my uncle who lived in Northern Canada had a mishap where his old-man fell out of his long johns, thus loosing an extra layer on insulation. I was only at the end of the day that in undressing to see a clearly distressed, blackened and shrivelled piece of manhood with a dose of frost-nip. Apparently the pain of thawing-out was akin to repeatedly striking it with a hammer!Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

A group I used to ride with were once joined by a guy who used to wear Y-fronts under his kit. He used to drop us on the climbs we were laughing so hard at his VPL.0

I think the OP is afraid of 'Podium Bulge' as they call it at Competitive Cyclist who recommend Assos shorts with the large pad at the front for that very reason. 'Coffee shop bulge' would probably be more appropriate. Boxer shorts under lycra!Pegoretti

I have noticed an abundance of VPLs when riding with the local CTC group, male and female. I always think this strange but don't like to comment for obvious reasons. For me, I wash my shorts after every ride, draw your own conclusions.I have only two things to say to that; Bo***cks0

Maybe because I never really thought about it until i posted and don't hang about with cyclists. I'm sure I've given plenty of people a good laugh over the last year with my VPL as I've past them.0
