dampener problem

i have a revelation with a pop lock remote dampener.
the problem is, is that i can push down the leaver and it 'compresses' but when i press the release button it doesn't return to its original position. it has only just started to do this after some hammering in the peaks, is it a case of taking it apart, giving it a clean and replacing?
any ideas?

Yeah, take the cable off and clean. Also the bit under the top cap can get clogged.0
