My Shimano M535 pedal started to bind. So I took it apart and cleaned and greased it. Now the tricky bit! I can't tighten the lock nut without the cone becoming too tight. How can I hold the cone in position whilst tightening the lock nut? It's all a bit fiddly.

Hard isn't it? IIRC you can buy the correct tool from Shimano. When my M747's started to moan I took the axle out, left them in some degreaser for an hour or two and wiped them down then filled the pedal body with grease and re-assembled with the remainder of the old grease pushed out as the axle was screwed in.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
