ive got a Giant Terrango which i've pretty much upgraded over the last 2 years, bit by bit, till the bike is pretty good for what i need - mostly bombing around local fast XC, with the odd bit of heavy quarry / trail centre madness

i want to try and make a bigger difference now, and the only things left to 'upgrade' are the wheels or maybe even the frame - everything else is as good as i could afford, and i'm pretty happy with how it runs and handles most everything i can throw at it :D

i'm thinking the frame will pretty much (obviously) change the whole bike! which i dont mind, as i would like something i can get going a bit faster, with a bit more of a direct feel - the terrango frame while solid, is a bit.. well solid!

but i keep reading about wheels, and the difference to weight for instance, is that the better way to go?

for a start, wheels are probably easier to decide on! the choice of frames is massive!

whats the most obvious upgrade that will make a significant difference, and 'improve' the bike? in terms of speed, feel, chuckaroundability etc?

i'm thinking maybe wheels to get another few months out of it, and then bite the bullet and re build with a bespoke frame?

or given, that i'm fairly flush at present, should i go for the frame, and try and get the sort of ride i'm after, and then go for wheels once i'm on a constructed machine i'm happy with :?

opinions? and also, if you dont mind suggestions of wheels and frames that'll suit the riding i do?

  • Wheels are the main point of contact and can make a massive differenc to speed and handling. I did it and mine feels like a new bike.
  • thanks guys, budget for wheels? um.. £200? push to £300 if its the 'right thing to do'

WHat is the full spec of your bike?
  • If you're going for wheel then Hope Hoops are solid choices. They've got quite a loun freehub click but they're well sealed and easy to service

+1 at getonyourbike. If you have £300 get hope hoops
  • upgrades are: rockshock tora's / deore cranks / DMR flats / raceface bar and seatpost / a specialised saddle (cant remember which one! )

i was advised to stick with the original disk brakes (which are fine - plenty of stop, and good modulation) and its got deore front and rear mechs and shifters - original cassette too

i run various tyres depending on conditions, and have pretty much get what i need i think?

i'll check out the hope hoops, a loud freehub wont bother me i dont think..

    thanks all
