Replacement front and rear mechs

I have just been building a bike using a used 2006 Stumpjumper frame, using my Kona Blast hardtail as a donor for bits.
My original plan was to swap the forks, brakes, bars, wheels plus the gearset, but as the frame came with a better crankset (just needed new chainrings) and also LX front and rear mechs I decided to go with those. Also left were an SRAM X.9 front shifter and an XT rear one.
Having built up the bike I find that the front mech neither shifts up nor down well, which looks to be major wear on the cage. Also the rear mech is quite hesitant to shift. As the ones on my Kona have 3 years use (and I might re-build that at some point for use) I am planning to replace the mechs on the Stumpy with new ones.
I'm looking at the SLX and XT as I found the Deore rear mech on the Kona was not that reliable in shifting espcially when any mud was involved. The question is whether the XT is worth the extra, given the good quality shifters? The XT front mech I can get for about £5 more than the SLX, so is quite tempting, but the rear is about £15 more, so takes a little more thinking.
I have Middleburn slickshift chainrings, and an XT rear cassette (9-speed).
Actual cost is not such an issue as using lots of bits means the "new" bike has not cost a lot, so I can comfortably afford the XT, but don't want to pay money that isn't really necessary.
Any thoughts?

I like the SLX stuff, as far as I am concerned its great quality at a decent price. Sure the XT is a little better but not that much of a difference,
Saying they I do have a rear XT Mech on my bike, but I bought it second hand off of here but cheap.Specialized Rockhopper Comp 2009.0
