Problems removing Look Keo Max's
Due to poor quality allen keys and a lack of mechanical sympathy, I've managed to round the 8mm allen head on one of my Keo Maxs
How can I get it off? I've pulled the pedal apart and there doesn't look to being anything there that's square to get anything on
Thanks

A pair of mole grips or a medium stillson should grip the axle enough to let you get it out. The other methods get a little more destructive, hammering in torx keys - which wont work on a steel axle terribly well, heating it up - really not very goot for your cranks.
The next up grade of method i'd recommend would be very carefully gluing an allen key in of appropriate size with liquid metal and giving that a go, then chopping the key with bolt croppers if you cannot get it through the hole.
Also potentially you might get grip with an imperial key.0 -
That's impressive (rounding off the 8mm bolts of those pedals!). You must have massive arms
Sorry about your problem. I had a chainset ruined by one of my sets of Looks when it basically bound itself to the crank arm.0 -

Mole grips just turn - cant get a grip
Now trying to glue in an allen socket with liquid metal but doesn't look likely as glue doesn't seem that strong - "as strong as welding" - I don't think so.....
Next step drill the bastard thing as cant bring myself to swing a hammer near my SRAM Red chainset!
Thanks for the suggestions0 -

Massive arms - no...started with a 5 inch allen key that I used to put it on in the first place, progressed to an allen socket on my torque wrench
Does seem to have welded itself to the chainset despite being greased
I was only taking the bloody pedals off to return them for warranty replacement as they've never spun properly for clipping in. I'm guessing the butchery above is going to invalidate the warranty a bit.......0 -
You'll not generate the required clamping load with mole grips.
Try a pair of Stilsons, if there's room. If you can get the crank off and mount it in a vice then that will make things easier. Also, apply plenty of WD40 around the thread a few hours in advance. And, of course, make sure your turning it the right way!- - - - - - - - - -

I have two sets of the Keo Max pedals. One set spins, the other don't. I just learned to live with it.
How long have you had them, etc? Wonder if I can return mine!0 -

Problems with the seals on some of the early Keo 2 Maxs - Look know the problem and fixed it but are really difficult to deal with and didn't issue a recall, dealer fix etc. Think the warranty's 12 months but with a design fault you should still be able to get them fixed if you go via a dealer
If yours are Keo 2 Max Carbons, you can send them to me and I'll send them off to get fixed/replaced in place of the ones I've butchered....0 -
In this case i think the stillson and a vice is going to be the best solution for you...0

I bet the problem is on the left pedal, it hasa LEFT HAND THREAD! (ie to undo it you turn the allen key as if you are trying to tighten it.
Therefore, if all else fails, you can drill it out through the allen key hole, proably usinga 5mm drill bit, drill slowly, and as it bites you will probably find that the thread work loose.Colnago Addict!0 -
