Doing a Marathon with a friend next year in Italy, 130km. I'm a roadie.... well apart from my BMX days in the 80's! I need to do some training over the winter. Which bike would suit a marathon. Full Suspension or Hardtail.... would a 29er be better? I'll be training in Surrey Hills, well that's the plan.

I assume this is off-road enduro type riding. Depending on the budget, full sus XC bikes are better at long distance work than HT in my experience.
you get better grip and less fatigue. Even something with 2" of rear travel is worth having. But if your budget wont stretch to decent rear shock then stick with a high end HT.
e.g. Specialized FSR XC Pro
Also if you go full sus its likely to complement your road bike better.
Keep at least 15% of your budget for mods you may have to make. e.g. pedals, seat, bar ends etc.0
