FSA Team Issue Carbon Crank Problem

I've just aquired a new FSA Team Issue Carbon Crankset, with external bearing bracket, I've fitted it to a 12 year old Dolan Ally frame. The problem is that although everything changes as it should, I can not use the 12,14 and 16 sprockets when on the inner ring (50-34 compact), because the chain fouls on the inside of the outer ring. The set up uses 105 8 speed shifters, and mechs. I am curious, is this normal for compact cranksets, or for FSA set-ups. Their seems to be no way of adjusting offset from bottom bracket, except possibly by swapping the wavy washer from left to right side. I like the finish and appearance of the chainset but not that impressed with the engineering. Any thoughts or experience with this crankset would be appreciated.
Cheers Gary

This is normal for modern transmissions - you should avoid using the smaller sprockets when in the inner chainring - this isn't anything to do with FSA, I expect any other brand of modern chainset would be the same.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

You will often get chain rub on the smaller sprockets but using a 8sp chain will make it much worse as the chainset is optimised for 9 or 10sp with the rings closer together. Using a 9sp chain will help. Not sure but you may even be able to use a 10sp one, there is only 0.2mm difference in sprocket thickness. This would probably get the 14 and 16 usable but not the 12.
  • Thanks for that I'll try changeing the chain, I had thought of buying a 10 speed cassette, using the cogs I want but with the spacers from the 8 speed one, again with a 10 speed chain. But a chain is easier, and if I do go the cassette route I can still use it.

105 and up 10sp cassettes come with integrated sprockets so splitting one is a non starter.
