Hi all

For my Design and Technology GCSE I have been tasked to design a bicycle mirror that will help make the cyclist more aware of rear view traffic and assist
in safe cycling for all.

To help me with my research can you answer the following questions by replying to this topic in the space provided for each question.

Q1. How many Bikes do you own or have access to?
A1.

Q2. Do you currently have a Mirror Fitted to your Bike?
A2

Q3. Other than brakes and shifters how many other devices are fitted to your handle bars, Lights, Bell, GPS etc?
A3.

Q4. How important would the weight of a product of this type be?
A4

Q5. How important would the Aesthetics of such a product be, Aerodynamics?
A5.

Q6. How important do you rate cost when buying a product of this type?
A6

Many thanks for your responses

Will

Q1. How many Bikes do you own or have access to?
A1. N (N+1 is the ideal number of bikes)

Q2. Do you currently have a Mirror Fitted to your Bike?
    A2 No.

Q3. Other than brakes and shifters how many other devices are fitted to your handle bars, Lights, Bell, GPS etc?
    A3.Dennis The Menace

Q4. How important would the weight of a product of this type be?
    A4 no too worried.

Q5. How important would the Aesthetics of such a product be, Aerodynamics?
A5. well as it is only a road type of product i guess a bit.

Q6. How important do you rate cost when buying a product of this type?
A6 it totally depends on what you come up with.

there are already lots of ideas out there

    eg

    my favourite is

as you dont really need to see anything. You only really need to be aware of it.

My ears are the best mirror, what bloody use is a mirror on a MTB?
    Don't think, BE:
  • id use a mirror, but not on an MTB. id post this in commuting if i was you, youll get a better answer in there.

and there are loads of competitor products, from the cateye ones that bung into the end of a bar, to some cycletech thingy that goes around the bar, (i worked at halfords, thats just the ones we sold, there are loads of other).

one of the better ones is made by BELL, who make helmets, and it clips onto the visor and provides good visibility behind without blocking up infront.

but yeah, stick this in commuting, and ull get much more useful responses.

Not sure exactly how you're supposed to design something original in this respect there are already tons of designs out there in the market and every practical option has already been done.

if you ever bump into that mythical lycra clad sexy lady mtb'er on the trails you get front and rear view before you wrap yourself around a tree

    A1. 2

    A2 No

    A3. 1x light 1x Speedo

Q4. How important would the weight of a product of this type be?
A4 Not as important as functionality and useability.

Q5. How important would the Aesthetics of such a product be, Aerodynamics?
A5. Its got to look good for me to consider it.

Q6. How important do you rate cost when buying a product of this type?
A6 Price is the 3rd thing i look at. Function is 1st, style is 2nd.

    Hope this helps.

I could see this being useful on tight singletrack at a busy trail centre, where the user can now spot faster riders behind them without having to turn right round to look.
